IAN not there?

Featured Replies

Hello.

Today I made a flight to LGTS Thessaloniki, DVOR 34 approach. Thought that Ill try out IAN approach, but didnt go as planned. Now my question is that, for IAN to work do I need to have G/S on-off displayed? If its not available then theres no IAN? I saw slope marking on on legs page and all but in the end there was no FAC or G/P annunciators. Does IAN work only on some approaches?

• RNAV (approval required)
• GPS (approval required)
• VOR approach
• NDB approach
• LOC, LOC-BC approaches.

Are the approaches where you can use IAN (if equipped of course)

Normally, IAN is used in place of LNAV and VNAV.

Did you also armed APP mode on the MCP?

APP should not be selected under the following cirumstances:

• the guidance to be used for the final approach is tuned and identified (as
needed)
• the airplane is on an inbound intercept heading
• both lateral and vertical deviation pointers appear on the attitude display
in the proper position
• clearance for the approach has been received.

And having G/S on might come in quite handy of course. ;-) Otherwise, the whole principle of IAN is gone if you ask me.

Sonny,

Pages 688, 862, 863 & 888 of the PMDG - NGX FCOMv2 are a useful read.

Thank you both for your answers. I loaded autosave and gave it another try. Now this time it worked. Explain it to me guys: Im turning onto final heading still on LNAV/VNAV, 4nm out of FAF. I have no FAC and G/P annunciations so I press APP button on MCP and bam, there they are (not armed just yet ofcourse), and white deviation bugs also appear. So is it normal to get it only after I press APP button or should they appear somehow else and by themselves?

Thanks a bunch,

Raimo

Yes, you need to press the MCP APP button in a similar sequence as you would if you were conducting a normal ILS.

You mentioned the status of the FMAs as 'not armed yet' & that can cause confusion.....

Remember that WHITE FMAs indicate an ARMED Status - GREEN FMAs indicate an ACTIVE Mode

FWIW at this point it really is worth 'staying with it' & take some time to look into the manuals that came with the product...

Some good reading prior to attempting this inside FSX:

IAN Approaches - PMDG FCOMv2 Automatic Flight 4.20.20 Pages 232-233 - Discusses the use of the MCP APP button & what occurrs in IAN Mode.

IAN Flight Mode Annunciations (FMAs) - PMDG FCOMv2 Automatic Flight 4.20.23 Page 235 - Discusses the FMAs you should see as you conduct an IAN approach.

Cold Weather Altimetry - PMDG FCOMv1 Adverse Weather Supplementary Procedures SP16.12 Page 268

You will need to take into account the effect that cold weather can have on barometric altimetry (as applicable) & use the method & tables as highlighted above to adjust height values for all published approach altitudes (think LEGS Page), your MDA (think Capt & FO PFD) & the missed approach altitude (think LEGS Page).

During flight:

Landing Procedure IAN - PMDG FCOMv1 Normal Procedures NP21.72 Page 148

This is a 'read & do' & is the sequence you need to follow.

You can actually go right to the beginning of this chapter & follow through each phase of flight if you wish.

The NP section of Vol 1 of the FCOM answers 99% of the Qs posted here.

Hope this answers the Q.

APP should not be selected under the following circumstances:

I think we should read "APP should be selected under..."

IAN to work do I need to have G/S on-off displayed?

You can check it in FCOM vol.2 on 11.43.20 (page 1092). So we'll have to set G/S off for IAN only on ILS (G/S out) approach.

Does IAN work only on some approaches?

You shouldn't use it on offset approach or where constant descend angle is not applicable.

For example, this approach - http://charts.aero/view/pdf/29682 .

FAC will intercept 185 right away, it won't fly 164 and then turn to 185*.

You will need to take into account the effect that cold weather can have on barometric altimetry (as applicable)

Unfortunately cold weather correction not applicable to FSX at all.

Thanks a lot, that clarifies most of it :)

Yes, you are right, I forgot to add a few words inmy sentence, and I put the wrong word in place, it made my sentence look weird. Sorry for that. And I can't seem to edit my reply for some reason.

''APP should not be selected until the following circumstances exist:.'' Was what I actually meant to say. ^_^  Sorry for that.
