The Western Roundup: Announcement

Featured Replies

The Spring Event Team is delighted to bring you another of the annual series of MSFS flying events. This year, the Spring Event focuses on General Aviation during the contemporary era. Everyone is welcome to participate in this light-hearted and friendly competition. (Someone will win and receive all our congratulations – but no one really cares. The important thing is to have fun flying and mastering the challenges.)

The Spring Event typically attracts simulator pilots who participate in the forums at AVSIM, FlightSim.com, and Sim-Outhouse as well as elsewhere on the web. You can learn more about the event, and register to participate, by visiting the Sim-Outhouse Multiplayer forum here:

The Western Roundup has the following features.

  • Fly General Aviation Aircraft seventeen legs (about 10-12 hours in the air) from Seattle, through the Rocky Mountain West and Desert Southwest, and then back to San Francisco Bay.
  • Your goal is to minimize time and fuel consumption.
  • Fly whenever you like, either online or offline. Use real time weather but set the simulator clock to daylight if you wish.
  • You can use any of a large number of pre-authorized GA aircraft. (Piston-powered, not turbines.) The event parameters make aircraft of different speeds and fuel consumption more-or-less competitive, depending on the skills and strategies of the pilot.
  • Newcomers can take advantage of the Rookie Mulligans that absolve newcomers of penalties for crashes and similar "rookie" mistakes.
  • The Roundup begins on April 27 and ends on May 27, 2013. You may enter and fly at any time before the finish.

A nearly-final draft of the general setup and the essential rules, as well as clarifications and updates, can be found at the Official Rules and NOTAMS thread here:
http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/showthread.php?77403-Western-Roundup-Official-Rules-and-NOTAMS

Or the draft (without updates) can be downloaded from a Dropbox server here:

We hope that everyone will enjoy this year's Spring Event.

I agree with Eamonn, sure sound like fun!

I'm thinking about getting either the Real air Lancair or Duke for my Gold class entry. Does anyone have any recommendation of which to buy? I'm leaning towards the Lancar (it looks so cool!), but I'm open to suggestions.

hmm, im interested in the same or the Carendado SR22. :) Always loved that plane, got to fly one once.. :)

Also, anyone gonna be online to do these and if so where?

FYI, Tom just promoted Mike's announcement post to a front page article. Yeah!

DC, I have both the Real Air Duke and Lancair Legacy. The Duke is a fine plane but I have to give the nod to the Lanceair. The Legacy is very fun to fly and you will need to use those speedbreaks or risk flap damage when decending to land. The Legacy does not want to slow down. The engine sound and vibration on startup really add to the realism and it just looks so cool.

I will probably be entering in the Silver Category using the Carenado CT210M Cessna Centurian II.

I will probably fly these on evenings and weekends. I was thinking about flying my legs on the Digital Themepark Teamspeak and their FSX multiplayer server. I am aquainted with a number of GA flyers over there and am going to publicize it for those folks who might be interested. See if we can get some new folks flying with the Duenna.

Let me add to Jeff's comments... It's a tough call DC. The Duke is a beauty - inside and out. But so is the Lancair Legacy.

Part of the decision will be - do you prefer a single or a twin. As Jeff said... the Legacy has a slick little airframe but easily managable in the pattern (to get to gear and flap speeds) with the speedbrakes. If you favor the Legacy's looks... you will not be disappointed with the plane.

I have only the Eaglesoft SR22G2/G3 Turbo (not the Carenado). The Eaglesoft version is very nice, but has a weird locked spot view thingy going on (initially it appears zoomed out further than "normal"). iirc, the ballistic parachute functions and will work correctly if deployed under the proper conditions.

I nearly bought the Carenado SR22... but read here (AVSIM) the panel wasn't up to snuff and there was an fps problem. You would be wise to search out some users reviews.

Would be nice to start a thread for Online flights... just to post when will be flying and what server (and teamspeak).

I think I'm going to fly the Duke.  I need something fast so I can hope to actually finish this time, given I'll be out of the cockpit for about 10 days or so during the event.  Why do these things always go on around my vacations?  Grrr.   :Frustrated:  Would love to take a Silver or Bronze class around the low course, though.  Maybe on my own...

Not really interested in winning (i.e. fuel efficiency).  Plus, I need a plane with enough luggage space to fit a paper-pusher from one of "those" banking houses 'cause there's no way he's sittin' up front with me!  :t0105:

Just remind your passenger of the slug line rules :)

Jeff, Rob, thanks for your opinions. I think I'll go for the Lancair. Now I only have to figure out how to make my Warthog better suited to be used left handed! :Tounge:
