APU faults on first attempt at start

Featured Replies

Hey guys, this has been driving me NUTS lately! I feel like I've searched everywhere and just can't find the answer. When I start from Cold and Dark, and it's time to start the APU, no matter what I do, this is what it does. I put it to start, and fairly quickly, the low pressure light and fault light come on, and nothing happens. If I switch the APU to off and do it again, it starts normally. I thought it was just something I was doing wrong in my procedures but I follow the checklists exactly, and even when I use FS2Crew and my FO sets everything up, everything screws up because he tries to start the APU and it faults. Some help would be very appreciated, thanks!

Are you giving it enough time to start? The oil pressure light is a normal thing on start up until the APU gains some speed.

The fault light comes up as well. It definitely does not start.

Yeah it happens to me too only if i load one of the saved panel states sometimes, Since you're using fs2crew tell the FO to start the apu 5 or so minutes prior to pushback or do it yourself, that way if it FAULTs again you wait the 5 minutes and the FAULT light should extinguish and then attempt another restart. When you shut down at the gate on arrival you just resume the previous panel state and everything will be fine after that.

FWIW, I'm seeing this quite often as well -- I'd estimate one in every ten or so APU start attempts result in immediate failure. I've run into this issue whether I'm starting the APU using ground power, battery power, or engine-driven generated power (after landing), with plenty of fuel in the tanks and adequate battery voltage available on all occasions. Flipping the APU start switch to "off" and back to "start" usually clears the condition (and yes, I'm aware that proper procedure calls for a five-minute cooldown period before doing so). In all cases, there are no active failures listed on the AIRCRAFT FAILURES CDU page.

Whaddaya all think? Bug or a feature?

To illustrate what we're talking about, here's a video by Skysurfer007, encountering this problem unexpectedly during an engine failure test flight (skip to 12:30):

I have exactly the same problem with the APU when loading another panel state. My workaround is to save the entire flight in FSX and load that one up on my next flight. Of course this only works if you want to take off from the airport where you landed before :)

Yay! I'm not the only one. What exactly do you mean save the entire flight? Normally it doesn't bug me to just switch it off and switch it back on, but since I use FS2Crew now, it just kind of screws things up. I forget a lot too so I like set up the FMC, he gets back from the walk around, and I realize we have no power...

I have the same problem. Just reinstalled fsx on a new drive and this problem pops up from nowhere. For me, the only thing that have changed is that I have installed PMDG 777, so all liveries for the 737NGX and panels where installed through the new OPS Center this time. Could this contain a bug?
