Suddenly getting Black Squares for Lights

Featured Replies

This issue just started occurring today (Apr 15, 2013).  All aircraft in the sim now have black boxes for strobe, nav, landing lights, etc.  Also, aircraft contrails now appear as white and light grey boxes.

Moreover, aircraft windows will occasionally be opaque when viewed from the outside, but can still see through them fine when inside the aircraft.

When I exit the flight, sometimes the aircraft selection window (showing the selected aircraft slowly rotating) will show the aircraft as a grey, jumbled mess, with no textures.

FSX Accel in DX9 mode

i5 750

8GB RAM

Win7 64bit

ATI (now AMD) HD 4770

Catalyst v13.1

As stated this just started occurring today.  Prior, I've been able to run FSX on a relatively trouble-free basis for years.  Any real help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Just a thought did you load 3d shockwave lights ? this can cause it if you have not updated it to latest.

Sounds like you uninstalled a program that also removed the effects (.fx) files in your Effects folder.  Some commercial developers add new strobes and lights, etc., and, instead of backing up the default, they just replace them.  When you uninstall them, so are the effects.  Here's a post I found on the subject that explains it more in detail - http://forums1.avsim.net/topic/65089-square-nav-lights-is-this-a-bug/?hl=blue++background

Best regards,

No, the aircraft that was loaded was OZ's Grumman Goose, and I do not have Shockwave's 3D light installed.

The A2A 377, B-17, and P-47 with Accu-Sim are installed and I understand those use the 3D lights, but I hadn't loaded those aircrraft for a flight.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I had already looked in the Effects\texture folder and all of the fx_n bitmaps are still there (fx_1, fx_2, fx_3, and fx_5).  At any rate I went ahead and replaced them anyway from the defaults I have saved.  Also, I hadn't uninstalled anything from FSX in a while.

What would effect the window opacity and contrails, though?

Some texture change I would assume may have caused the problems - try updating your video driver wont hurt.

Already running the latest video driver.  I had even re-installed it, as well as trying other obvious troubleshooting steps, prior to posting this subject, but to no avail.

I've since restarted FSX (no 3rd party weather, default aircraft loaded, clear weather) and this time I noticed "artifacts" around some of the AI aircraft that are in flight:  thrust reversers on top of the fuselage on 737s, various bits of the aircraft "levitating" around de Havilland turboprop commuters (both are UT2 aircraft).

DirectX-9 mode is used.  Haven't used DX10 mode in years.

Ok save your fxg.cfg file somewhere and delete it afterwards from fsx folder and let it rebuild a new one start fresh

I think I found a solution.

In the Catalyst Control Center / My Digital Flat Panel / Properties, I noticed that both of the checkboxes under DVI Settings was empty.  I thought I had these checked, but something (or someone else) unchecked them.  Particularly, the Alternate DVI Mode was unchecked, and checking this mode usually resolves display corruption, which is what I was getting, though  FSX only!  I checked them, ran FSX a couple of times, and things seem to have gone back to normal.  I have to run FSX a few more times over a period of time to make sure this isn't placebo.

I'll be back again if it turns out to be so, though I hope not.

Thanks for the prompt replies!
