A question about the wind settings

Featured Replies

I have set up a flight with a crosswind. I know that it blows intermittently. The problem is that sometimes there are fairly long gaps in which it does not blow at all. Is there a way to make the wind appear a little more frequently ?(I don't want 'gusts', as they blow more strongly than regular wind, I just want the wind to blow more constantly.) Thanks in advance.

P.S.I tried setting the 'gusts' to be the same speed that the wind is, but it didn't help. When i start a flight, it blows pretty much continually. But after a few minutes it almost stops. There may be time periods of a couple minutes or more in which there is no wind at all. When it finally does blow, it is blowing at the correct speed. But it is not continuous wind by any means. Maybe there is a better way to set up a crosswind that I don't know about. The way i did it was to set the 'surface wind' at the altitude at which i am flying. I tried setting the 'winds aloft' but i didn't like that because it makes you balloon upwards, rather than blowing you to the side like a crosswind would. My computer is fairly new and it has a Pentium 4 2.8 ghz chip, so i think that should be more than enough processing power. Also, I turn off the antivirus running in the background in case it is taking up processing power. Thanks again;FlyGirl

I'm not sure what you are experiencing exactly...Some questions:Are you using FSUIPC and do you have wind smoothing turned on? If so, it takes a while for the wind you manually set to actually take affect. How do you know that the wind is stopping? Are you using shift-z to see the actual wind direction and speed? Are you using any 3rd party weather program? Is it overwriting your manual settings? Also, turn off weather dynamics and see what happens. FS might just be changing your winds on you. If you manually set a wind setting, you should see that wind consistently until you change it. Forgot to add... don't use the advanced weather settings to set the wind. Just try setting the direction and strength in the basic setting.

Thank you for replying to my question. Are you using FSUIPC and do you have wind smoothing turned on? If so, it takes a while for the wind you manually set to actually take affect. **I am not using FSUIPC, but i will try it. As it is now, the wind blows continually at the beginning of a flight, but after a few minutes there starts to be long periods of time in which it does not blow at all.How do you know that the wind is stopping? Are you using shift-z to see the actual wind direction and speed? **I know the wind is stopping because the plane is not being pushed around at all. I have some scenery that i put in the sky, so when flying next to it i can see that I am flying either smooth and steady, or shifting around. Are you using any 3rd party weather program? Is it overwriting your manual settings? **No 3rd party weather programs. Also, turn off weather dynamics and see what happens. FS might just be changing your winds on you. **How do I turn off 'weather dynamics'? I don't recall ever seeing that option. If you manually set a wind setting, you should see that wind consistently until you change it. **That's what I thought, but there are long periods of time with no wind at all. I set up the crosswind by setting the 'surface wind' at the altitude at which I am flying. I didn't like the 'winds aloft' setting because it makes you balloon up too much. Is there another way i should be creating a crosswind?

>**How do I turn off 'weather dynamics'? I don't recall ever>seeing that option.I am probably not calling it the right thing, but in the weather options you can set the weather rate of change or something. If you set the slider full left, the weather will not change on you. That might be it, I know that can do odd things to weather you set manually. >**That's what I thought, but there are long periods of time>with no wind at all. I set up the crosswind by setting the>'surface wind' at the altitude at which I am flying. I didn't>like the 'winds aloft' setting because it makes you balloon up>too much. Is there another way i should be creating a>crosswind?Yes, don't go to the advanced tab, just use the basic settings. There is an option to simply set wind direction and strength, and it will stay constant for any altitude. It isn't real for winds aloft, but if you are just doing patterns and crosswind practice, it works ok.

I still can't find the option for rate of change of the weather. I have FS2002; maybe that's something only available in FS2004. I looked in 'Settings' on the main page, and also under 'World' and 'Weather' once i had started a flight. I saw a slider for 'wind shear' strength, but that's not what i want. I had to go to the advanced tab because I have a specific crosswind level i need to set (beyond just 'light', 'moderate', or 'severe'). Actually, i have one flight that has a 30kts crosswind, and another flight with 55kts. I turned on the Shift Z option. I see how it shows the direction and speed of the wind. Sometimes both numbers go to zero. When i was flying with a 30kts wind, that second set of wind numbers never went higher than about 16. Does that guage show what the computer says the wind should be blowing at? Or what the airplane instrument is reading? Is it in knots or MPH? I know that when the wind does finally blow, it is stronger than 16kts. Generally, the values in the Shift Z gauge don't really reflect what is actually happening very accurately. BTW, i am flying at a heading of 090*, and i set the wind to blow from 140*.Thanks again for your help; I really appreciate it.

No, I'm not.

There is no weather change setting in fs2002. Sorry, I assumed you were talking about fs2004.

I wish I could do that in reality! Haha. To tell you the truth, I've never had a consistant wind in any of my real world landings as there is always some sort of gust, whether it's considered gusting or not. It may seem consistant for a long time, but you still have occational moemnts it slows down or speeds up suddenly for one reason or another. So, from a realistic stand point, what you're describe sounds like a problem we pilots have in reality. Unfortunately in flight sim you can't feel the sudden change and instinctively make the sudden correction to minimize its effect on you.----------------------------------------------------------------John S.
