October 4, 200421 yr I put this in the SCENERY forum but ... well, you know.Do you fellas know of any good download for KFRG that works adequately in FS9? Or is anyone planning one?I've not found anything myself. Details of the airport are here:http://www.airnav.com/airport/KFRGGrateful for any input, thanks. October 4, 200421 yr i've been simming out of KFRG for years (mostly because i live in this area) and Ive yet to find any add-ons for it. Not the greatest GA field to have to deal with in real life due to it being smack in the middle of what might be the busiest air traffic corridor on the planet (with KLGA, JFK & KEWR just to the west and KISP to the east). They say if you can learn to fly here then you can fly anywhere :-)...so i'd also be interested in a 3rd party rendition if anyone knows of any available.Dave Dave Kalin Excel Classes Computer Lessons
October 4, 200421 yr I live in Bayville on the north shore above Farmingdale so know all about the traffic patterns for KLGA and KJFK. It's fun working out which runways are in use as I watch aircraft on downwind or base when I take the dog for a walk! Luckily they're mostly still high enough and far enough out that I don't have to deal with finals!I'm also a regular visitor to the Airpower Museum at KFRG, just so that I can stroke their C-47.I presume you have the latest freeware Long Island improvement, Dave? It's great, and sorts out the east end where MS must have been out to lunch. With that and the FS Genesis landclass, life is pretty good; with US Roads you can even have a faithful rendition of the world's largest car park, the Long Island Expressway. Now I just need a bridge to get me from Oyster Bay to Bayville otherwise I can't get home ... mmmm, too late for the FS9 patch, I wonder, LOL?Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
October 4, 200421 yr Mark, Im curious, I had the Long Island coast enhancement installed but found that it did something to the marsh on the south side of Kennedy which basically drew a diagonal line through the airport texture on the approach end of Runway 4 out in the marsh, it overwrites the aerial photo in this area and it looked kind of funky, are you seeing that? I actually uninstalled it due to this problem.Hornit
October 4, 200421 yr Hmmm ... not sure what you mean there, Hornit. I've just had a look and don't see anything untoward, other than jetties and approach light supports. Runway 4L or 4R? Could you maybe post a screenie of your problem or email me one? It seems sad that you would be forced to abandon this excellent improvement for one line out of place ... I'm sure the author would like to know about it if it's showing up, anyway.Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumonthttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
October 4, 200421 yr Hornit,After installing the Long Island Coastlines this afternoon, I had a look at KJFK to see whether I have that diagonal line too. Negative. I do not see anything strange near runway 4R or 4L.Jozef http://pluizig.ath.cx/signature.jpg
October 4, 200421 yr Ok here is what I see, check this pic out:http://www.x-plane.org/users/hornit/jfk1.jpgI followed the install instructions to the letter, but there is a problem with his instructions. He states to make sure you move the HP928170.bgl from the NAME/scenery folder into the Temp Hold for Long Island coastlines folder then put that into the NAME/scenery folder(not copy but move the bgl there) This is of course for backup and should not affect anything, Holger uses this in all his installs also.Problem is there is no temp folder created here for that purpose in the zip i have off of Avsim. Thats ok, I created it and everything except the airport aerial photo for jfk is correct. Im not sure butI must have something in my cfg at the wrong level for this to happen. I know a good bit about scenery design and installation and cant seem to fix the above problem. I use FSG landclass and this happens with or without it in use.Anyone have any ideas? I'd be interested to know where you have this scenery in the cfg file and how you installed it, maybe that is the problem.Hornit
October 4, 200421 yr Hi Mark...i had an uncle who used to live in bayville many years back...i live on the south shore in Valley Stream...and I AM on final approach corridor for JFK!...it can get kinda noisy here, especially lately with the runway construction closing down 2 runways so now we get more traffic comming over when the wind blows the wrong way :-)..and no, i dont have the Long island "fix" you mentioned...if you have a link id love to take a look at it though...i tend to not be a scenery junkie as far as add-ons go because i like to keep my performance of the sim as smooth as possible within reason, however since i fly alot in the area i might be willing to install it if the change is dramatic enough. If you have TeamSpeak maybe we could get together for a flight or 2 sometimes...i like to fly both IFR jets as well as VFR pilotage flights in the smaller props.Dave Kalin Dave Kalin Excel Classes Computer Lessons
October 4, 200421 yr Firstly, Hornit ... OK, I see what you mean now, and yes, I have the same. It seems to be where he has abutted new texture to the existing airport texture. As it does not affect 4L itself this doesn't bother me a hoot personally as the improvements of the rest of his work are so dramatic - heck, MS had square blocks at the end of the island, which he has now shaped up properly - but I shall drop him a note in any case, as we have already been in touch. I wrote to congratulate him on his efforts as I try to do with all freeware men who add to my enjoyment. You are quite sure that the anomaly you see wasn't there by default, Hornit? To be honest, I can't be bothered to reverse my own installation just to check this! And Dave ... hi, Long Islander. The file name is long_island_coastlines.zip and the author is Dan Baisley. It makes significant improvements to the shore line of the island. I can only really judge from areas I know well - I have not dragged out maps and charts and checked it all, by any means - but it has made a great difference to my own enjoyment of local flying. Thanks for the offer of meeting up on TS. I fly reguarly with DC-3 Airways in multiplayer, and maybe sometime we could do a local hop or two in GA aircraft around Long Island, sure. My current favourite is Eric Dantes' freeware Bonanza which is awesome. I never see the point in flying MP in the big iron (except in VATSIM) as you never see each other - or shouldn't! - although I do have fun with military formation stuff now and again.Mark "Dark Moment" BeaumontVP FleetDC-3 Airwayswww.dc3airways.comhttp://www.swiremariners.com/newlogo.jpg _________________________ Mark "Dark Moment" Beaumont VP Fleet, DC-3 Airways Team Member, MAAM-SIM
October 4, 200421 yr >Ok here is what I see, check this pic out:>Hello, this is the author here. I've found a simple fix for the problem you describe. In the "Scenery Settings" menu, select the "Long Island Coastlines" entry and click "Move Down" untill the "Long Island Coastlines" entry is below the "New York Aerial Photo" entry. This should allow the photo scenery to override the landclass my scenery package.>I followed the install instructions to the letter, but there>is a problem with his instructions. He states to make sure you>move the HP928170.bgl from the NAME/scenery folder into the>Temp Hold for Long Island coastlines folder then put that into>the NAME/scenery folder(not copy but move the bgl there) This>is of course for backup and should not affect anything, Holger>uses this in all his installs also.>>Problem is there is no temp folder created here for that>purpose in the zip i have off of Avsim. Thats ok, I created it>and everything except the airport aerial photo for jfk is>correct. This is caused by a bug in MS Windows that I didn't find out about until after I released the scenery. The problem occurs if when you create a zip file with an empty folder it. If you then try to umcompress the file using the "Compressed File Explorer" that comes built into Windows XP, it assumes that an empty folder is not important and doesn't bother to display it when you double click on the zip file. Two solutions: After opening the zip with the Compressed File Explorer, click "File" the "Extract All". The empty folder will then be expanded as usual. The other solution is of course to use a different program to umcompress zip files. I've used Alladin Expander for years... I like it's interface a lot more than Winzip. http://www.stuffit.com/win/expander/index.htmlI noticed that when Holger creates his Temp folder, he places a text file in it before he compresses it to a zip file to prevent it from being empty. I think I'll do that in the future, it saves a lot of confusion.Dan Baisley
October 5, 200421 yr I do a lot of messing with scenery so I dont mind a few moments rearranging files for testing. This anomaly does not exist with default coastlines. I will try his suggestion as i think that will work, its not a big deal but I'm pretty picky! :) This scenery is really well done and After looking at this a bit I dont mind it and can live with that small problem. Overall it is a HUGE improvement to Long island. I have to say thank you to Dan for a job well done! Now how about fixing that dorked up area just south and west of the Verrazano bridge! ;)Hornit
October 5, 200421 yr Dan, Here is what it looks like after moving the files down below the NY aerial photo in the cfg. This is much better! Just thought I would show you so you can see the boundary area, still messes with the lines but now my marsh is back short of 4L.http://www.x-plane.org/users/hornit/jfk2.jpg Thanks for the fix, and again thanks for the coast! I just flew out and back and it is AWESOME!Hornit
October 5, 200421 yr Yep, no matter what, you're gooing to have a boundary. The problem is that when photoscenery is active, it overrides any landclass in the photo area.
October 5, 200421 yr >Now how about fixing that dorked up area just south and west>of the Verrazano bridge! ;)>>HornitSorry, no ammount of scenery addition can properly simulate the smell of Fresh Kills landfill. :) But if it's Staten Island coastlines you want, I'll see what I can do.Dan
October 5, 200421 yr Heh, Im talking about the straight line just to the southwest of the west side of the Verrazano bridge. Just looks like they forgot to put any coastline data there.Hornit
