Runway lights hovering above ground

Featured Replies

Hi.

Don`t think I had this last time I tried DX10.

I`ve reinstalled Shockwave Redux and it still doesn`t work well. (dissappears in various views).

Now I have floating runway lights.

Not sure if these are connected?

Eddie

Although there are a lot of complaints about floating runway lights all the way back to FS9, I don't think the height is out of norm.  From my understanding of these lights, they are about 2 feet off the ground in real life so FSX is just trying to mimic this concept.  It is definitely not a DX10 only issue.  Screen resolution and the wide_screen_aspect setting in the FSX.cfg will have some effect on the lights too.  In some places, you can go on a runway and look around and some disappear and some are higher than others.  UTX has no affect on the lighting too.  I think the commercial airports like Flightbeam and FSDT do it better than the default and the lighting is not as bad.  I try to stay away from flying at night as there are too many anomalies plus it is very, very difficult to fly at night in FSX especially in heavy weather.

Best regards,

Jim

Just an FYI, Jim - Steve is well along on the way to releasing a DX10 "Fixer" app, which will take care of most anomalies - certainly all on my machine which was either FS9-vintage, or scenery's and/or aircraft that were just plain not compatible.

I`ve un installed Shockwave redux, and put the modified stock FX files into effects folder, but still getting floating lights.

Driving me mad.

Its mostly the red threshold lights and runway border lights.

When taxying onto a runway, you have to drive through these lights.

Not noticed this before.

Very annoying.

is it like this?

and no one have any idea about that boxes? pls... :)

It seems to me that there are no fixes for runway lights being above ground, being indistinct, or just plain disappearing, as any "old" airports that I have tested have them all over the place, and many looking exactly as they do in DX9 - (St.Maartens being but one example. here, here, here and here).

This also unfortunately applies equally to many "new" airports: some are high, some low and there are some that just don't look right.

The best examples of very good DX10 lighting comes from SimAddons, who makes the Canadian series of airports, spreading west from Halifax airport. Their lighting is among the best I have ever seen, DX9 or 10.

I've looked at some airports with ADE, but don't have any idea (at this point) how to fix them - though I'm pretty sure it's the individual airport, and the developer who either can't do it, or doesn't care enough to test it in DX10, citing "too little demand" or "too much work involved", and the best way to fix that is to test the airport in DX10, and if it works with the patch - like those of FlightBeam - support them, and if not - like the FlyTampa's St. Maarten's airport - don't support them.

Patch 3.2.1 will fix most airport grey boxes and aircraft, and the odd boxes like the one above (Murat), but Steve's DX10Fixer will be out pretty soon, so I'd just be patient for a while longer, as "most" things are going to be fixed....... but probably not poor runway lighting... fingers crossed.

All the Best,

It's a well known problem.  It means you have a corrupt, replaced, or missing FX_2.bmp located in your Effects\Texture folder.  As I recall, it usually gets replaced by some software program and, when you uninstall that program, it uninstalls that file too.

Best regards,

Jim

I`ve found, the UK2000 scenery runways do not have hovering lights,

Mostly default scenery.
