SweetFX Problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

I haven't been around for some time - too busy enjoying the fruits of much tweaking and DX10!

I decided to try SweetFX, new version.  Copied the files and folder to FSX, and was delighted with the result.

I loaded the Feel There 777, and found the VC to be completely translucent.  The instruments were invisible, but shadows of knobs etc. could be seen.  A few other aircraft are affected, to some extent, a few freeware aircraft are similar to the 777, and some are not affected at all.  White in any livery is blindingly bright.

None of these symptoms were apparent before SweetFX, and what I'm describing is after removal of all the SweetFX files.

Any ideas, anyone?

Thanks, Jim

Make sure the highmemfix=1 is in the Graphics section of your config.  Did you remove all the files belonging to SweetFX from the main FSX folder?  There should be a d3d file and an .ini.

Best regards,

Jim

Thanks, Jim,

I did remove all eight files and one folder, relating to SweetFX, and I have the Highmemfix=1.

I understood removing all SweetFX files would also remove all trace of its effect on FSX. It could be coincidence, but there was no problem, I moved in the SweetFX files, flew a BN-2 Islander (which has been unaffected) over much improved scenery,

fired up FSX next day to find these translucent textures in various aircraft, removed all the SweetFX files, and found the problem with aircraft remains.

I can see no problem in scenery, some aircraft are affected to various degrees, but only a Feel There 777, plus a Posky 777 have unuseable VCs (the 2D cockpits are ok).

Everything in FSX has been processed with Addon Converter, and all .bmps converted to .dds. DX10, for me, has made FSX a completely new, vastly improved sim, with no problems 'till now.

Very, very, strange!! :(

Regards, Jim

Hi Jim! Nice to see you again! What version of the patch are you using? .. and here's the filesystem as unzipped...

Good to hear from you, Paul.

I have SweetFX V1.4  https://www.dropbox.com/sh/115xczyf7wpafop/RCYUpmIZNl

I was using Mathew's settings.  I carefully removed each element which I had added to FSX.

Without much hope, I restored a recent backup of my FSX Drive - no difference.  You know I'm not very technical.  I suspected any problem left behind by SweetFX was probably in the "Shader Area", and that lies in my C:\ not in G:\ where FSX lives.

Why didn't I leave a good system alone??  Maybe it's a subconscious itch to tweak?  I had a look at the How-To, for any fresh info, noticed SweetFX, and couldn't resist a try.  I liked it too!

I have a copy of Shade, which I haven't used since my last re-install.  i.e. before DX10.

I hope you can help!!

Best Wishes, Jim

Hi Paul,

Thanks again for all your help.  Now that I've got the tools to return things to normal, I'll have a go with SweetFX 1.37.  Thanks for the settings file.

I'm still entranced with the difference from my old FSX/DX9/GTX580, and FSX/DX10/GTX680.

Yup - I completely agree with you, Jim. One heck of a difference, isn't it!

Back to SweetFX.

I put the SweetFX files you sent me in FSX, to have another try.  I started AlacrityPC as usual, but it didn't start FSX, just reversed itself, puting everything back in place.

I know you use Alacrity yourself.  Do I need to add something to Alacrity to cover SweetFX?

Easiest way, Jim!

All the Best!

Hi Paul,

Just a sad footnote.  I really liked SweetFX, but I had several crashes while flying with Active Sky, and ATC controlled by PFE.

Eventually, FSX wouldn't start at all.  I reinstalled the files which you sent me last time - no difference.  I restored a recent (pre Sweet) backup - no luck.

I'd been toying with the idea of doing a reinstall anyway.  Limiting myself to what I really use at first.  I'm now doing that as I type.

If anything becomes clearer in the future.  I might just be persuaded to try again.

Best, Jim

  • 2 weeks later...

Would you be able to send me the ideal sweetfx files to use and a set of instructions to go with it? I've been struggling with 1.4 and I'm currently using DX10 on FSX.

Hi Haase,

Check your PMs.

Further to my last message, I've reinstalled FSX, added SweetFX, now working well.

I've installed quite a few addons, testing along the way.  SweetFx is still working and I really like the results.

Cheers, Jim
