May 15, 201313 yr Hi, I feel that my graphics card is limiting my performance in FSX and other games I play. I'm not to sure if it is just my actual computer specs or just one component. My FSX specifications are at medium lowish for the most part and my .cfg is tweaked. My frames are alright for the most part, usually 20-30 with default scenery and 12fps with an addon airport. I make sure I have no background processes runnning but I just feel that I might not be getting the performance I could. I have been thinking of building my own computer, but if I could increase my performance, why build a new computer. Appreciate the help. -Mike My computer specs are; (prebuilt computer) i7 2600 @3.4ghz Nvidea GT420 8gb RAM 1tb HDD Michael Ignagni
May 15, 201313 yr Yes, your graphics card is limiting your performance. Ideally you should be looking at something in the Geforce GTX 660 range (or better).
May 15, 201313 yr Author I've looked at upgrading the card but it seems as if it won't fit in the case Gateway made. Michael Ignagni
May 15, 201313 yr I've looked at upgrading the card but it seems as if it won't fit in the case Gateway made. If you only checked for the GTX 660, check for the 650ti, it is shorter, if it is a length problem. Ryan L.
May 16, 201313 yr Author I actually only looked at the GTX 560ti, I'll take a look at the 650ti now! Michael Ignagni
May 16, 201313 yr I have been thinking of building my own computer The magic words! Let me de-mystefy the home build; a chimpanzee could do it! I was once a serial graphics card upgrader but a few years ago became a home builder and I would encourage you to do the same. Your FSX experience will change in a way akin to the differance between the the pre and post NGX FSX world. No mater what your budget there is no time like now to be considering a home build. In a month or so from now you will be able to choose between the latest gen hardware or the one before that or the one before that and if you use your head and get creative you could be pushing 5gz on your CPU and not braking the bank to do it. This is the golden age of FSX hardware. The most important thing with your hardware is to have a strategy. Mine is to keep the door open to used parts and buy used quality a couple of generations old. For example I have a large Lian-li ATX aluminum case that I bought used about 7 years ago for about $80. If I had to buy a case now I would have no problem picking up a huge well cooled Case for about $30 - $40 on craigs list or equivalent. I have 1000w SilverStone PSU that I bough about 5 year ago on ebay for about the same and I am still using it now. Anyway to cut a long story my next upgrade will include an i7 4770k and a motherboard. Every other component I have is going to be in that build and those componente got my i7 920 benchmarked at 4.8 ghz with creative cooling. If Haswell (as it is romoured does not deliver on expectation) I will get a used i7 3770k and appropriate motherboard or a used 2700k and appropriate mother board. Ether way I cannot lose. because I don't mind forking out for the latest but if I decide not to I know going back a generation is going to be cheaper after the latest is released. So to recap build your own or at least make you decisions based on building your own as an onging project.
May 16, 201313 yr Hmm, I'll have to start saving some money now. Better to stick with what you have now and start saving money and planning your strategfy to get the FSX Dream machine than flushing the money you have down the toilet on a GPU you will be dissatisfied with in 2 weeks. Thats the nature of FSX! Its like a bent thumb tack that you need a sleige hammer to insert. ^_^ :LMAO:
