To what extent can Opus replace Trackir?

Featured Replies

Greetings,

I don't yet have Opus, but I've been impressed by the number of folks very happy with an Opus/REX approach to weather. I'm also interested in the DHM feature.

I have been happily using Trackir over the last 2 years, but it seems it has suddenly died <sniff>

So before I part with a relatively large sum to replace Trackir, I'm wondering whether Opus (for a smaller investment) can provide a total immersion package (weather, cameras and DHM) such that I can live without Trackir.

I'm equally interested to hear views and experiences from those who do and don't run Opus in combination with Trackir. Thanks.

Hi

I also have TrackIR but no longer use it when flying the airlines (PMDG 737NGX) since I have all the camera views set up to move about the cockpit and only need the standard FSX hat switch panning. So, and this is just my opinion, I find TrackIR redundent when flying the NGX. I have occassionally used it when flying in the Lancair Legacy and SF260, but again most of my flying is satisfied completely just switching between my camera views and using the hat switch.

So in my opinion TrackIR is an excellent addon for any simmer but I have found I can fly quite hapilly without it, using it on occassions only for VFR flying in the Legacy or SF260. The best option is obviously to have both.

I disagree... TrackIR is about much more then getting around in a VC. It's increasing the immersion factor because the things you see on the screen matches (to some extend) to what you feel with your head. It has nothing to do with the aircraft type.

Personal opinion of course but I totally agree wtih Frank. If it's about convenient access to views then Opus will do, but for the immersion factor there is no substitute for TrackIR. Many TrackIR user say they don't use it that much in an airliner but I actually use it all the time even on 5 hour trips. I couldn't imagine going through the checklist in the NGX without TrackIR!

Then again, you should know that since you have been using it already! :D

It is all just personal opinion and preference. I think TrackIR is an excellent addon of course and OpusFSX is not meant to replace it or remove the need for it in any way. We even provide an interface using the NP SDK which has just had a TrackIR High Priority option added, the only option that was missing in the past.

All personal preference but the discussion is rather mute seeing as they are different packages and OpusFSX has never been intended as a replacement. Please everyone try and keep these posts to support related topics.

So let's put it this way then! If you don't get it solely as a TrackIR replacement, then get it for its weather engine. While I have used ActiveSky in all its iterations from its very first release and also REX, Opus is now my weather engine of choice. Being a CP Flight MCP user I also very much appreciate the driver Opus so kindly provides!

Thanks for these opinions - and apologies Stephen, for posting something other than a 'support' topic.

As others have said, OpusFSX (a wonderful addon, that I use and love!) can never replace TrackIR, purely on the basis that Opus is software and TrackIR is hardware.

...in the same way that Windows 8 can never replace the PC itself.

I love TrackIR and OpusFSX and would hate to fly without either.

No problem Portia911,

I think the consensus of opinion is get both and enjoy your sim flying to the fullest.

Stephen :-)
