October 26, 200421 yr Hi Brian,My understanding is that the .bgl file it creates can be used in someone elses fs9 and they don't need the program installed for it to work.
October 26, 200421 yr For those asking about the ability to share your created BGL - if you used the built-in FS2004 objects all you need is send your friend the BGL. If you used one of the add-on objects you will also need to pass on the scenery and textures folders of the "Static Object Library".The BGL file created by Object Placer contains only the position informaiton, not the actual object.Hope this is clear.Israel
October 27, 200421 yr It's obvious you guys have created a big hit with this little applet. If there is anyway you could create a true WISIWIG in the next version you would have the "Add-on of the Year" award! I (and many others) would even be willing to PAY for such an improvement rather that waiting endlessly for FSE to ever work as advertised.
October 27, 200421 yr Hello Will,How is everything with you? This is a great program and it should allow most people to spruce up the FS world with very little knowledge of scenery design.Your comments and difficulties are due to limitations in FS and not to the program itself.Size of objects: The FS team used different scales when making the objects, probably because they were made by many different people over a period of many years. It would mean a lot of work to try to determine the scale of each object - there are many hundreds of them - and indicate the correct setting.Heading: Same as for size, there is no way to know the heading of any object except by placing them. Generally, buildings are aligned North-South and many of the other objects face East, but there does not seem to be any fixed rule.Bridges: These are not meant to be placed as objects, and are not so placed in the FS. They are automatically created as road segments over water and the sizing and orientation are handled in that road-creation process. We can place these bridges as objects, but then all the details of placement must be determined by you. Joe Brown did some very nice work on the Florida Keys bridges - they are in the library if you are interested.Altogether, this is a wonderful program. Congratulations to the authors!Best regards.Luis Hot, humid Caribbean paradise!
October 27, 200421 yr When we started with Rwy12 Object Placer our initial scope was to create a program that will be, from the user point of view;1. Easy to use - no previous knowledge in scenery developement and or complicated design tools.2. Sharing - being able to make your own sceneries, uploading them as addons or mail them to your friends3. Open ended - being able to add new libraries to the program4. FREEWARE - lets return to the basic principle of our wonderful hobby, be able to share with others what we create. In this first version of Rwy12 we included, as Israel explained above, two types of objects; 1. FS9 default objects which we could not control in the sense of direction, size, etc. During our tests we found out that there is a need to experiment a little with them, kind of trial and error, until you get the best result. For example, the water tower - it is too big and you have to reduce it to 40% or so, depending on the scenery.2. New original objects - are done in gmax. They are facing north and most are centered (try out placing a C-172, you will get it exactly where your sim C-172 is, save the flight and when you return to FS9 after compiling the BGL the static Cessna will cover the sim Cessna). Some, such as the tree lines, are pointing north and the center point is SW corner of the tree line. In the trees we also added some information on the little image - tree hight and row length.Adding new libraries will be the real test for the program. There are many freeware macros out there that people designed over the years, and we hope that a lot of them will be added to the library. One problem will be the file format. Rwy12 is based on the new SDK namely using XMLMDL files. We didn't try to convert API files to this format, and honestly we don't know how to do that. As for old gmax objects, it is not a problem, once you have a gmax file you can export it in XMLMDL format provided you use the new set of plugins. Some people experienced problems in installation, most when FS9 is not located in drive C:. We advised all those who wrote us for a fix which was already discussed here in this forum.Thank Guys and have funSeev
October 27, 200421 yr Seev,Congrats on you and your partners efforts. RWy12 is a nice synergy of products with an equally nice gui. I can't find the reference in your forum as to the third party problem with default fs9.exe being on a non-c:drive. Also...I created mesh for all of KY. The objects seem to imbed themselves under the ground. I suspect they are now on the original mesh, and mine being much more accurate..gives a greater elevation on the hill I live on...so the object is proly between the original and my mesh. I did get the truck to appear in the air...(but NOT the trees or treelines...),then painfully by "successive approximations", got it at the right altitude and attitude. BTW....follow me here. 1. Since fs2002 doesn't require you to unload the program, only create /delete/add scenery areas, wouldnt it be easier and much faster to do prototype work in fs2002?...are there the same objects in fs2002?...if not could we possibly "ahem...borrow the files with the objects in them and place them appropriately in the fs2002 file structure?...am I crazy?...What do you think about using fs20002 as a rapid development environment, and FS2004 as the final deployment?anyhoo...let me get on with the problem...I got the truck to appear...but not the trees or treelines. I double checked this message chain. Could you please repeat your fix here?...mine is on j:gamesfs2004.your proggie is on J:gamesfs2004addonsrwy12.Thanks,Chas
October 27, 200421 yr Chas,After getting a number of mails and checking them one by one we came up with this fix list;1. If your FS9 is not on drive C: the installer might not follow the change of directory you ask for, though it seems the change was accepted. So after installation look for Static Objects Library folder in X:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9Addon Scenery. If you don't find it there look in drive C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesFlight Simulator 9Addon Scenery for the folder (it will be there without the whole simulator of course). Move the folder with the 2 sub-folders and files to the right place and don't forget to activate this new scenery.2. dotnetfix program is language sensitive, so if your system is in a different language, other than English, you have to check for another version of the program.3. In some cases msxml program might be in conflict with MS SP2. If you have an error while trying to install msxml search google for a solution fitting your o/s4. If Rwy12 creates a BGL and everything seems right and you still can't see the objects, check to see if you didn't forget to press "get FS position" while selecting the objects.5. When Object Placer retrieves the location from FS, if you are on a system where the decimal separator is defined as a comma (',') rather than a dot ('.') the generated BGL will be wrong. In this case you need to manually change the longitude and latitude text in the XML file before saving the file or generating a BGL. Changes in the XML file can be done with notepad. And a general advise; read the tutorial. It is in C:Rwy12 Object PlacerTutorialshave fun guys
