July 20, 201312 yr Looking more into this, I do see some piping called mufflers, for Piper for instance. Then they're covered with a muff, to supply heated air. Sure doesn't look like a tuned exhaust. And......are they any quieter? My 180 Lycoming (RV-6) with cross-over exhaust certainly sounded a lot better than the Archer I flew.... But the Archer wasn't exactly new car quiet by any means. One other note: When using a car engine with reduction gears for an airplane, the engine can be turning at 5600 rpms, instead of that 2300-2700 you'll be getting from the Lyc or Continental. They'll be noticeably louder on takeoff, as well as in the air. A Mazda type rotary, as opposed to a radial needs muffling. It's very loud. These type of engines would be used in experimental class aircraft. P.S. --- I actually "miss" the sounds, that I had from living under our GA airport pattern.
