October 26, 200421 yr Fellow Avsimmers :)I dont like flying the old & modern light planes in FS2004 (Jenny, Staggerwing, Skyhawk, Mooney, Vimy, DC3, etc)I'd like to trim down the airplane list since I only fly the big fanjet airliners and the regional jets/turboprops.Will manually deleting all the stock airplanes I dont want cause FS9 to roll over, stick its landing gear in the air & croak? Or is it safe to wipe 'em?Thank u :)---------------------------------PS: Byrna & JSACKS I'll have the tests on the stock 747 done today and post my results to the original thread I started ok! (This is regarding the Posky 747-400 crusing with exessive nose-up attitude; Im testing to see if the stock 747 does the same thing)
October 26, 200421 yr Hi there :)It really depends on which ones you delete. This is because some other planes (eg: addon ones) use the default sounds from some of the stock planes. For example Posky's 747 will use the default 747 sounds, and it looks for these sounds in the Aircraftb747_400sound directory. If this directory isnt there (deleted) you'll have no sounds...That might be a bit confusing :) So basically, if you delete a stock plane, then end up with no sounds in another plane (addon or stock) then the chances are you shouldn't have deleted it. :) But FS9 won't explode or anything if you do...:)PS another tip is to back up the stock planes before you delete them... This saves searching through the CD's again to restore them.
October 26, 200421 yr I would NOT delete the stock planes. So many addons reference different parts of them. Removing them can cause problems. ------------------------- Craig from KBUF
October 26, 200421 yr It could also mean that if something went wrong at one point and the sim wanted to return to safe mode where it would load the default plane, which is the cessna it can't find it and would be unable to start fs9.
October 26, 200421 yr Paragon,I find your new siganature to be at least as unpleasant as the former. But hey, that's just me.:-)Terry
October 26, 200421 yr What has that got to do with anything...If you have a problem with my sig. why voice your opinion in this thread and clutter it with meaningless drivel instead of writing to me in person by way of private message!:-roll
October 26, 200421 yr Back in FS98 days I got the bright idea to delete the default planes because I never used them. I ended up having to reinstall the sim. I would leave them there. Cheers,Scott
October 26, 200421 yr Yikes!Thank you all for your advice :)I shall not delete the stock planes. They arent doing any harm and I was just getting mouse-lazy because I have to scroll past all these planes Im not interested in when I select an airplane to fly!Was just curious to see what would happen if I erased them. Im glad I checked with you guys first! *Wipes brow*I downloaded custom sounds for all my add-on airliners (Posky A340, iDFG MD-11, Posky 747) because the stock jet sounds from Microsoft sound like an old vacuum cleaner I once had.TY again! :)
October 26, 200421 yr yes do not delete them as many files and gauges are used by addon planes, also none of the default training lessens or flights will not work, even the default flight will not work. what i suggest is that you get hold of AirEd, an old program from 2000 but it still works fine; open the *.air file for the plane you do not want to use and change the "Aircraft Type" to 2, this will stop the plane appearing in the aircraft selection menu, but the plane otherwise will be unaffected, if you so wish you'll still be able to use/fly all the lessons and flights, including the historical planes, they will just not be there in the selection menu.i use this method for planes that i do not wish to have in the selection menu, but do wish to use them in certain saved flights and it works fine. only "problem" is if you are short of HD space. fortunatly i have plenty left.
October 26, 200421 yr <<<<< what i suggest is that you get hold of AirEd, an old program from 2000 but it still works fine; open the *.air file for the plane you do not want to use and change the "Aircraft Type" to 2, this will stop the plane appearing in the aircraft selection menu, but the plane otherwise will be unaffected >>>>>Thanx Bruce, that sounds like just what I need! I got gobs of disk spade so thats not a factor, what I really want is to make unused planes disappear! That prog u mentioned sounds like just the thing! On the flipside...will simple renaming of the files prevent them appearing in the menu? :)
October 27, 200421 yr No, renaming the folders won't prevent the planes from appearing in the menu. The way the files appear in the menu is controlled by three entries in each livery/paint of each plane's aircraft.cfg file. For instance, in the aircraft.cfg file for the default Cessna Skyhawk (c172), the first section should look about like this:_________________________________________ ********* .cfg file shows brackets *********title=Cessna Skyhawk 172SPsim=Cessna172SPmodel=panel=sound=texture=kb_checklists=Cessna172SP_checkkb_reference=Cessna172SP_refatc_id=N176CMui_manufacturer=Cessnaui_type="C172SP Skyhawk"ui_variation="White with blue and gray"description="A stable and trustworthy plane..."visual_damage=1_________________________________________The three entries in question each begin with the string ui_, and modification of these affects the way each variation of the aircraft in question is described in the drop-down boxes in the aircraft selection menu. If you'd like to still be able to select the aircraft at any point in the future but have them essentially out of the way, you can change the ui_ entries of the "undesirables" as such (just an idea):ui_manufacturer=zzzui_type="Cessna C172SP Skyhawk"ui_variation="White with blue and gray"As long as each section of each undesirable bears this ui_manufacturer=zzz, they will congregate quite nicely at the bottom of the selection list. I would recommend moving the text in the original ui_manufacturer= entry into the beginning of the ui_type= text as I did above so they will still be sorted by manufacturer within the ui_type= field.Hope this helps,Kevin
October 28, 200421 yr Thanks for that detailed reply KChapman! That is really going to help me out a lot because Ive been wanting to prevent unused planes from appearing on the menu. Like I said above I now have to scroll a lot to hunt down the ones I want! I thought that the file names controlled the names that appeared in the drop-down box in the airplane-selection window, but you have now told me whats going on so Im happy! Im gonna print out ure instructions now!Thx again for ure trouble :)
