Photoshop painting technique question.

Featured Replies

I have just started a repaint of a Israir Dash 8 (Majestic Paint Kit).  Israir only flies the ATR so this is a fictional paint.  Now its a little difficult to ask my question without posting a photo, however, I will give it a shot and perhaps someone here can look it up.

The new livery has a number of shapes on the tail that wrap around the bottom of the fuselage.  The shapes are circular and triangular and all have different colours, some of the intersections of these shapes are transparent where you can see the shape below.

My method of painting this is to draw each shape using the Pen tool in Shape mode.  Just wondering if that is the best technique of if you would suggest another method.

thanks!

p.s.  just found a link to the livery in the Avsim library.  Here you go.

I use the polygonal lasso tool to draw the shape as close as I can. Then look at it in-game. Then it's a case of honing it. Add a bit here, erase a bit there, shift it up, shift it down and so on ad nauseum. Eventually you get what you're after...Hopefully.

Oh, the different shapes should be separate layers.

Good looking livery btw.

Either way will work just fine, depends on how you want to do it.

The only problem with the polygonal lasso tool, is the selection won't be as 'crisp' as doing it with a vectored pen tool, so you'll see some slight jagged edges along diagonal lines. Not a real significant item by any means, but something to consider.

Try as I might the pen tool is something I have never been able to come to terms with. :(
