HELP! Cannot run FS9!

Featured Replies

Hiya,I just installed windows XP professional edition and and FS9, when I go to run FS I get an error saying that it cannot find CD4, even though it's in the drive! It ran fine on my old system, and everything on my new one is working. Can anyone help?Cheers

Does the CD Drive play other CDs? Is the CD drive listed in My Computer? If the CD Drive does --not-- play other disks, then their is something wrong with the drive. If the drive is --not-- listed in My Computer - then go to the following MS Support Link; it has instructions on how to recover the drive in My Computer (ignore the KB title - it's wrong...)http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;EN-US;314060If you can play other disks - and the CD drive is listed in my computer - you'll need to get a replacement copy of CD disk 4 (there is a number to call - don't know what it is off the top of my head...)DanIT Support Specialist

* Make sure the CD is clean of fingerprints, dust, etc.* Go into Explorer and make sure the drive w/the CD is recognized.* Restart Windows XP. * Also check System Properties > Device Manager and make sure there are no conflicts indicated.Hope this helps some.Jim Young

The CD drive is recognised and there are no conflicts, other CD's work in the drive and the FS2004 logo appears on the CD Drive under My Computer. The CD has no scratches or marks on it, and it installed from the disk just fine, I was using it only two days ago anyway! I just tried a reinstall and I still have the same problem...I did get an error message to do with the firewall that coneswith win XP SP2 but I have disabled it since, and then reinstalled FS9. No go.Any more suggestions? Thanks Rich.

Rich - Is the CD drive the same one that was in the old system? I'm asking because some CD drives (both older and newer models) are simply unable to cope with the SafeDisc 2.9 copy-protection coding used on disc #4. If it is, indeed, a different drive, is there any chance you have another drive you could install as a test?Doug

>Ok thanks for your help guys! Microsoft sent me a no CD file>which works with the update too! Propblem solved. Cheers.>RichHhhmmmmm........are you not aware of the rules here about discussing such files???

No why? Microsoft sent me the file themselves after I rang their tech support.

>No why? Microsoft sent me the file themselves after I rang>their tech support. I was hoping you'd say something like that......now if we can get MS to admit that it's OK to use it whether one's CD#4 is compromised or not, then we'll have some modicum of legitimacy about the thing and can even discuss openly and hopefully, have copies available on websites other than those associated with cracks, cheats and similar material.Question: how big is the file they sent you?

>No why? Microsoft sent me the file themselves after I rang>their tech support. I forgot to ask if you had considering posting this information at any of the flightsim.com forums. They really are sticklers about mentioning anything to do with 'no CD' files.

GCB,The file that they sent me was 304K, they actually sent me two, one for FS9 without the update, and the other for FS9 with the update. I don't think there's much wrong in using a no CD file for legit reasons and your always going to get cracks for games no matter what. I'm not registered with flightsim.com, avsims good enough for me!Take it easy. Rich

Interesting. Those are smaller than the 'normal' files. And the question begs to be asked: why didn't they release the one with the latest patch instead of making everyone use the CD in the tray??We all agree that using a patch with a purchased version of FS seems innocent enough....it's the samll percentage of users who have other than purchased versions of FS who then bypass the security via an unsponsored crack which make discussing a 'no CD' file untasteful. Is there any kind of EULA that came with the files that MS sent you that prohibts their dispensing to other FS users?

>Is there any kind of EULA that came with the files that MS>sent you that prohibts their dispensing to other FS users? No they just sent me an email with the two attachments, thats it. They didn't mention anything about redistributing it. I guess they just leave it to the recipients common sense and rely on them being responsible.

I will only say that it is a real pain to always have to put disk no. 4 in the drive every time you want to fly, that is if you can find it. Plus it WILL become damaged sooner or later, then what? Steve A
