Intel Overclocking Guide

Featured Replies

Gentlemen,

Having just installed the latest GenX VFR Photo Scenery I have decided that the time has come to try my hand at overclocking - problem is, I have no idea where to start!

My motherboard is an Asus P6X58D-E, the cpu is an Intel i7-960 @ 3200 with an X58 chipset.  I am running Win 7/64.

Can someone please give me (or point me at) an "Idiot's / hand holding / step by step guide" to overclocking this thing?

Should point out, I have a stock Intel air cooler, so I'm not looking to fry the cpu!!   ^_^

Thanks,

Bernie

Stock Intel Cooler on a 960 and you're already running 3.2GHz?  You don't have any substantial headroom left there...

Don't overclock that chip with the Stock cooler. There are good air coolers out there for 50 to 100 $. I got mine to 4,2 GHz with a Noctua cooler and it has been running stable for over 2 years. Corsair have good air coolers also less expensive. Just Google how to overclock i7-960.

Thanks for that advice Gents, I hadn't realised that the air cooler supplied with the PC was barely up to the job!
