2014 Demographic Results Released
As with others, interesting results but no surprises. Given the growing number of high quality aircraft now becoming available for it, I would hope to see DCS included in this year's survey.

X-Plane 10 for iOS
Tried this for a few hours then deleted it. Only four airports world-wide? Non-working instruments, no map. IMHO Infinite Flight is far superior, as is Aerofly FS. Sad to see LR devoting resources to this when so many issues exist with the desktop product.

photography people, I have a question
My opinion would be go for the VR lens. It will be of benefit in normal photography, & will also allow you to hand hold shots in lower light than would be possible without VR. You can always pick up a bag later.

Monitor Calibration - Must Read!
True - if you're not using hardware calibration on your monitor then you're almost certainly not seeing true colour reproduction. I bought a Syder Pro calibrator a few years back, & it really made a difference the first time that I used it. I don't recalibrate as often as I should, so when I do there is a slight but noticeable shift between "before" & "after". Definitely worth doing if you want to see the colours that the manufacturer intended!

Cool SR-71 story
I would be very surprised if there wasn't an SR71 replacement in operation - it's just not in the public domain yet.

Thinking about getting the full FSUIPC but...
FSUIPC is the one piece of software that changed the way Flight Sims work. Without it (& Peter Dowson) much of what is taken for granted today simply wouldn't be possible. Unfortunately, far too many people seem to be unaware of this fact. Buy the product & give Pete a small return for the incredible amount that he has done for us down the years. Consider it a gift, a donation, a "thank you for everything that you have single handedly done for Flight Simming", but just do it!!

Best simulator for Glider pilots?
Must admit that I'd also forgotten about FSX as a soaring platform! If you head over to the UK Virtual Gliding Association (UKVGA) then you will find links to lots of gliders, & also some sceneries & lift add-ons. Well worth a visit!!

Best simulator for Glider pilots?
I used to have Silent Wings, which was quite good. I believe that the best one around today is Condor, although I'm happy to be told otherwise!!

I'm stunned by this commercial
Very impressive video - well worth watching more than once. And you can't say that about many advertisments!! B)

Flight 1 ATR
I was never able to get this working properly in FSX, so not surprised that it won't play in P3D. A great shame that they never updated it for FSX - it was always a superb aircraft in FS9 & deserved better.

How important is the GPU, for real?
You need to understand that in P3D, much of the heavy number crunching that is done by the CPU in FSX has been handed off to the GPU. Things like terrain mesh are now processed on the GPU, thereby freeing up the CPU for the flight model etc.. In short, although a better GPU will not make a lot of difference to performance in FSX, a good GPU is a must to get decent performance out of P3D. The LM P3D website has this to say: Prepar3D v2.0 brings many exciting updates to the Prepar3D simulation platform An all-new, modern DirectX 11 rendering engine that can take advantage of modern day graphics cardsThe core rendering system in Prepar3D has been completely overhauled and updated from DirectX9 to DirectX 11. Prepar3D is now able to better take advantage of modern graphics hardware. This has two main benefits to the user:Increased performance and control over what is displayed The further ability to have modern rendering features added to the rendering engine, including:A fully dynamic shadow system, including internal virtual cockpit shadows and terrain shadows. A new HDR lighting system featuring tone-mapping that brings increased immersion when training in all times of day. Volumetric fog and increased fidelity of clouds and weather.

Tako-Off tricks for P-51D
Beat me to it Paul - I was just about to post links to those items myself!! If it's any consolation to the OP, I find the P51D in DCS even more difficult to take off in than the A2A one - I've lost count of the number of smoking holes that I've left at the side of the runway in that sim! Practice, practice, practice ... ... ... B)

Tongass Fjords X?
I agree - I would happily pay an upgrade fee to get this working in P3D v2 - it's a superb scenery set. But I guess all progress comes at a cost ... ... ... ^_^

P3D 2.4 update problem
When I got that message I just clicked "ignore". As far as I can tell, the patch applied itself OK, & I have not noticed any problems with T3P add-ons.

Tongass Fjords X?
I would also be interested to know if a way exists of getting Tongass to work properly with P3D V2.4. I have UTX Alaska & orbx Southern Alaska, & these work just fine. However when I move into the Tongass area I am getting airports with no buildings or equipment; white aircraft; & major altitude discrepancies. Kaboki - could you share the info that you got from Holger? Thanks.

Another P3D thread
As far as I know P3D does offload some of the serious number crunching to the GPU. Again, afaik add-ons such as some of the A2a stuff, & the Majestic Q400 run as modules outside of FSX. Hopefully somebody more in the know will chip in ^_^

P3D V2 Newbie question - FSX scenery
I have installed both the "UK2000" airports, & the "VFR GenX" photo scenery for the UK into P3D V2, using the Estonian Migration Tool. No apparent issues, either with installation, or subsequent running. Hope that this helps!!

Where is P3DV2.3 better than FSX Dx 10
For you possibly & that is fine. However do not assume that ALL flight sim enthusiasts fly tube liners - because we don't. Plenty of us fly classic aircraft, warbirds or do a bit of bush flying every now & then. Or all three. Or even just to keep our hands in in the A2A C172 when a visit to the local airfield is not possible. I am a very recent convert to P3D, & as I enjoy all of the catgeories that I've just mentioned, I find it to be a better looking, smoother & more stable simulation than FSX for me to enjoy myself in. So it doesn't support the PMDG 777? So what? I'm not interested in flying the 777, no matter how good a sim it may be. I can understand that being a matter of concern to one segment of the flight simming enthusiast population, but please don't try to fit us all into one, narrow category. The flight sim hobby is big enough & wide enough for all of us to enjoy what we take from it. I take what I want from it, & I leave you to do the same. But please, don't go making unsubstantiated assumptions such as the one that I have quoted.

Eureka! I found the cure for my periodic stutterfest problem (but not the cause)
AlacrityPC does the same kind of thing - I use both to be on the safe side! ^_^

FSX Bush Pilots Planet...
I would recommend the Aerosoft Beaver - wheels, skis, floats or tundra tyres, it will get you in & out of just about anywhere.

Poor P3D Performance - How dusty is your GPU?
I clear out the (Intel) air cooler on my CPU every few months as the tiny gaps between the vanes get clogged with dust quite quickly, resulting in spiralling CPU temps!! GPU is slightly better, but the fans still benefit from attention with a small artists paintbrush at the same time. Would love to go for a sealed, water cooled system, but that will have to wait for a while!!

Dino makes such nice aircraft
I have his T45 & it gets a lot of use - superb aircraft modelling!!

Good solution for home cockpit builders
Great idea - now if he can just come up with a solution to my fundamental lack of space for anything like that!!! :-)
