Poor frame rates after disabling add on airports

Featured Replies

I purchased various add on airports last spring for FSX but with some of them,  I needed to disable due to very poor frame rates.  But I noticed after disabling these airports, the frame rates for these FSX default airports are still terrible, and only those airports where I had an add on.  I could not figure out why my frame rates were so bad with certain FSX default airports until I found out it was only with those airports I disabled the add ons.  With two airports,  KFSO and KATL, I even deleted the add on from the scenery library and FSX files but the frame rates are still really bad in the default airports.   Is there anyway I can trouble shoot this?     With KSFO, the mesh scenery is a little screwed up too even though I deleted completely the FSFO add on file in FSX.  Any airport where I did not have an add on is fine.  It is as though these add ons corrupted the FSX default airports after disabling them in the scenery library.

I deleted completely the FSFO add on file in FSX.

This might be the problem, unless you mean you removed it using the uninstaller. The addons might leave some files on folders other then the one they create in the main or main\Addon Scenery directory, such as AFCADs or Mesh files, and an indicator for that is hte fact that you say the mes is "screwed up".

Besides, removing an addon without using the uninstaller leaves traces in the registry behind, which will give you a headache when you try to reinstall them. Your computer will simply prohibit this, since the registry indictes that the program is still installed on your machine, so you will eventually edit the registry files manually in that case.

Some default FSX airports (SFO definitely being one of them, possibly also ATL) are "high detail" airports, and those usually perform worse than "normal" default airports. Also, given the size of those two airports and the proximity of KSFO to the rather detailed city of San Francisco (again, I don't know about Atlanta) puts some extra load to your machine, which can explain the bad performance you experience.

To give further advice, it would be good to know what your computer specs and your scenery settings are - both can have a significant influence on your frame rates, especially if combined with the addons you list in the "My Simulator" tab.

Florian,  Thank you for replying to my post.   I did not uninstall any of the add on airports in my programs which I did not think about.  I went ahead and uninstalled the Flightbeam KSFO add on and rebooted my computer, but it did not make any difference in performance.  The frame rates are still not good and there is still a mesh issue (see image).  There is a patch of grass on the runway.  The frame rates were always good with FSX's KSFO and KATL until this add on issue came up.   I did delete the KSFO add on in the scenery/world file, and that solved most of the mesh issue of grass on the runways, but there is still a patch of grass left left and it did not solve the frame rates.  I am not familiar with AFCADS or mesh files.  My computer is the following;

HP Pavillon

AMD Anthlon 4 630 Processor 2.80 GHz

Installed memory 6.00

64 Bit

I am not really familiar with SFO, so what your pic shows could be a bug in the default scenery (but I highly doubt that, as it would have been found and corrected very soon, I guess), and the picture does not show any elevation mesh problem, or at least I can't find one.

The frame rates were always good with FSX's KSFO and KATL until this add on issue came up.

Now that is strange - did you change any settings after the installation of those addons? Could it be that there are some recommended settings in a manual, which you adjusted your sliders to? Because I can't really imagine anything else to cause such issues, which persevere even if you removed the addon (and simply unchecking it in the scenery library should have done been enough in that case). But at least it indicates that your computer is basically capable of handling those airports (although from what I've heard the Intel i5/i7 processor series seem to be deal with FSX better, don't ask me why)

Other than that, the only idea I have would be to back up your FSX.cfg (e.g. by renaming it to "FSX.cfg.bak"). FSX will rebuild a new one on the next startup with the out-of-the-box settings, so you will need to add all tweaks again, re-adjust your settings etc, but I've heard, read and seen that this can improve such frame rate issues.

I wish you good luck in resolving this, but if the above doesn't help, I'm afraid that I ran out of ideas.

KSFO ... There is a patch of grass on the runway.

My default KSFO looks just like that, you are not seeing an anomaly.

I never had that patch of grass on the runway before.  It is visible over head and ground level.

I also have that patch of grass with default KSFO. Seems you have the default KSFO as well.

Florian,  Thanks for all the help.  I did adjust the sliders in FSX when I was troubleshooting.   I have set the most taxing areas such as water, ground vehicles and weather as low.   I have mesh resolution at 38, the default setting.    Others are saying that they always had the patch of grass on the runway 1R.  I never noticed it before and I have  flight simmed KSFO many times and never seen it there.  I still cannot understand why after deleting the add ons, the original good frame rates were not restored.  I have thought of renaming FSX and build a new one, but after all the aircraft addons and airline liveries, and the many various FSX trouble shooting I had to do during the past two years,  I am reluctant to do that right now.

I think you migt have misunderstood me - do not uninstall (and never simply delete!) your FSX - I was referring to the FSX.cfg, the configuration file, which is located in the C:\Users\<Your Username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX directory (in Win7, might be different in another OS). This will only reset all your FSX settings to the default values (and of course delete all applied tweaks), but if you keep your old config file too, you can easiliy add those tweaks again. This procedure will definitely not have any effect on any installed addons (except that you will be prompted to trust some gauges and the like again), but this has fixed a sudden performance issue for me some time ago.

Florian,  I understood, I just did not make it clear in my post what you recommended.   I have uninstalled the add ons for KATL and KSFO and deleted the files, but the frame rates are terrible, especially KATL.   I guess the only other option is to do what you suggested.  I don't look forward to it though because of all the work I put into my FSX for almost 3 years.   I wonder if anyone else had the same problems?  If I had known,  I would not have purchased any add on airports if I knew they would make a mess of my FSX default airports frame rates.  I had assumed if the add on did not work out,  it was just a matter of disabling it in my scenery library and my the FSX airport would return as before.

Not necessarily. Some addons modify/replace default files.

To return to an as-before state they need to be uninstalled, not just removed from the Scenery Library.

Yes,  I did uninstall, but it did not help restoring the airports.
