Computer boot-up question

Featured Replies

Hello All:This may be the place to ask this question as I know a lot of smart computer geek folks post here Each time I boot up my puter it goes through its cycle and then the last thing it does is display my C:/windows/system32 folder. Is there any way to stop this from showing each time I boot up?Thank in advance.Scott ChenoreGreeley, CO:-)

Hi,Never seen this happen before. The only thing I can suggest is to open "msconfig", go to the "startup" tab and post everything that is listed.Ed

Check if you have a key like this in your registry:HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerIf yes, delete it. Of course fiddling around with the registry is at your own risk. Do a system restore first!!Alex

Better still - back up the registry before playing around with it.Dave

DO NOT Delete the Explorer Key!!!That is a critical key with thousands of values stored in it. The system "might" rebuild it when you reboot it - but I wouldn't chance it.Istead - look at the following:1) Open MSCONFIG - check the "Startup Tab" -- make sure everything there looks good2) Click the "BOOT.INI" tab - click "Check all boot paths" -- it should pop-up and say "All appears OK" (something like that...)3) Do an adware/spyware scan & a virus scan (www.lavasoftusa.com) 4) See if you can find a file called "Autoexec.bat" on your HD (you will need to search in hidden files...) -- if you find one - open it in Notepad - and paste it's contents in here so we can look at it...5) Search for your "boot.ini" file and paste it here so we can look at it...That's all for now!

Sorry - my message appeared twice ???

Well, if my suggestion cannot be trusted maybe this will do:http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;228502Normally the key should be rebuilt. I habe done the same a few month ago, that is why I remember it in the first place.Alex

It does not say to delete the entire key it states to "delete the DesktopProces value from the following registry key": HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerSo -- if you delete that one value - all should be fine!I didn't know that (that) key existed! Hmm learn something new every day! Thanks Alex -- good find!

Oops,Dan, of course you are right. I shot out of the hip. Shouldn't do that.Alex

Nope, only once, each.Glenn"If God would have wanted man to fly He would have given him more money"

Hi all,Hope you can help out here. I'm having the same problem--and have had for several months. (I have followed your suggestions about msconfig, but cannot tell which of the many startup programs are troublesome. The boot diagnosis says everything is ok.) My autoexec.bat file is empty. The boot.ini has stuff in it that is incomprehensible to my ignorant eye (I'll gladly post the file if you would be kind enough to look). Also, I've run lavasoft several times in attempting to catch something here.Oddly, and only recently, my own startup has been fouled up even more strangely--it seems to forget the settings from previous sessions entirely. (Still not sure why this is happening--it is intermmitent which makes diagnosis even more difficult.)I shall eagerly be following this thread. Thanks,Mike MacKuen

Mike:Did you try editing the Registry Key that Alex and I mentioned? I'll gladly take a look at your boot ini and Startup Tabs.Screenshot the windows and post the results here (it may take a couple of shots for the Sartup Tab - the list might be long!)PS. To screenshot the window - click on it - then press ALT + PRINT SCREEN. Paste the image into some kind of image editor (Paint...) and save it as a JPG to upload here (crop the windows so they aren't gigantic!)Dan :) :+IT Support Specialist

Hi Dan,Thanks for taking your time on this.I did look for the "DesktopProcess" registry key at the "...CurrentVersionExplorer" registry key. It was not there. According to the MS help discussion, that's good news. Is it?Some screenshots of my Startup tab (on msconfig) follow. The 1st 3 shots are the startup tab and the 4th is a shot of the boot.ini tab as well. (I'm hiding the pictures here so that other users don't have to download them unless they want to follow this arcane technical discussion.)Much appreciation...Mike

Try to do a clean boot and see if that helps (if the registry edit doesn't fix it).To do a clean boot, do the following1) Run MSCONFIG.2) In the Startup tab- click Disable ALL.3) In the Services tab-click HIDE MICROSOFT SERVICES, then click Disable ALL.4) Click Apply.5) Click Close.6) Click RESTART.If this fails to fix it, try to boot in SAFE MODE and see whether the same thing happens.

Yes - I would try the clean boot - see how that goesYour Boot ini looks ok --- you have several items in Startup that are just memory hogs (qttask, realsched, msmsgs...) Try the clean boot - see how that goes - if that fixes the problem - we'll have to look at each item in the Startup...Dan
