Edinburgh freeware scenery help!

Featured Replies

I have Ian Gallacher's freeware scenery of Edinburgh (EGPH) and I have a problem with it, there are green hangers showing up in the scenery that are not supposed to be there. These hangers are the same ones that are found in Aeroworx's Johannesburg airport scenery. The hangers are covering parking spaces and blocking a taxi route (among other places). I would like to remove them from the Edinburgh scenery.I have been told to put the Johannesburg scenery above the Edinburgh scenery in the FS9 scenery list but that did not work (I also been told to try the opposite way). And I have been told to have the Edinburgh entry in the FS9 scenery CFG file higher than the Johannesburg entery (again I have been told to try this the opposite way also). Neither one of those suggestions worked. How can I remove the hangers from the Edinburgh scenery without un-installing the Johannesburg scenery?

As one who dabbles with scenery design, I find it really strange that certain objects from one set of coordinates would appear at an entirely different set of coordinates in the first place. Secondly.....why not _all_ of the stuctures from Johannesburg for example? Why just those hangars??Since my curiosity was thusly raised, I downloaded the respected sceneries and checked them out. I found no conflicts.Anyway, I suspect you have conflicts somewhere, no doubt, and would suggest the following:1) stay away from the *.cfg fileAssuming you currently have these two sceneries under the Add-on Scenery Folder, remove them and try this:2) place the EGPH scenery and textures in its own folder system under the Main FS Scenery Folder.3) place the Johannesburg scenery and textures in its own folder system under the Main FS Scenery Folder.4) ensure the textures marked "World" for the Johannesburg package are indeed in the FS / Scenery / World / Texture Folder.Start FS and at the opening screen, select "Settings" at bottom left corner. Next, select "Scenery Library". On the right side of the menu, select "Add Area". Double-click on the "Scenery" folder so it displays all of the individual folders. Browse to one of your new folders, and double-click on it and select "OK". Do the same for the remaining new scenery. Select OK to continue to load FS.Once the sim is up and running, close it out.Now start FS again. Your new scenery additions will have been accepted and you should be able to "go to" the new airports. The *.cfg file should also have been updated automatically requiring no further adjustments from you.Hope this helps....let us know how you make out.

Thank you very much for suggesting that. I tried it and although the green hangers still showed up I figured out how to get rid of them, I lowered the scenery density slider to "normal" and the hangers disappeared! I guess when I fly to or from Edinburgh I have to move my scenery density slider from "extremely dense" (extremely dense is what I normally keep it on) to "normal"I can't belive all this trouble to get rid of those hangers and the simple answer was to move a slider! :-lol

I can't believe moving a slider is the answer either. First of all, you haven't solved anything....all you did was cause the hangars not to display by lowering the density. There is no way they should show up in Scotland in the first place when their coordinates are for Johannesburg! There is a conflict somewhere in your scenery setup.I should have asked in the first reply to you if you have _all_ your scenery add-ons arranged as I specified or do you have everything under the FS Add-on Scenery Folder or FS Main Scenery Folder? These latter arrangements are not good management and can lead to the sorts of problems you're reporting.

I had the South African scenery folder and the Edinburgh scenery folder in the Addon scenery folder, then I moved them to the FS main scenery folder. Those hangers showed up both times.

Odd because it worked for me. I have Edinburgh in the Addon scenery folder and listed in the CFG at # 84. The Johannesburg scenery I also have in the Addon scenery folder listed at # 265. This totally cured the green hangar problem. However, that said, another problem has surfaced. The AFCAD with the Edinburgh scenery is flawed and causes a CTD when approaching the airport. I'm hoping someone will do a new AFCAD for that scenery.Lee

After moving them, did you activate them via the Scenery Library? Then did you allow FS to start, shut it down, and then re-start? Have you other scenery under the Add-on Scenery Folder? When you have the Edinburgh and Johannesburg sceneries under the Main FS Scenery Folder, are they separate folder systems or did you dump everything into the Main FS Scenery Folder/directory?

It may not be the AFCAD that is causing the CTD. There is a problem with one of the textures ( Rosythe, I think) that is cause a problem with FS9.1. There is a discussion of this and a fix at the Scotflight Site and forum.Link: http://www.visualflight.co.uk/scotflight/Hope that will help.Ed GreenKCLThttp://www.panelshop.com/DEV.jpghttp://www.globecargo.org/images/VAA_Sen_captain.jpg

The Edinburgh and SASceneries are each in their own folders in the Addon scenery folder. I think this works better. Thanks for the tip on the texture update. I will check it out.Lee

No this does _not_ necessarily work better.....why do you think your experienceing the problem????????????????????????????????????????????With everything in the same scenery folder, there's no way for FS to determine scenery priority.Try the method I suggested from the beginning and do it for _all_ your sceneries and see what a difference it makes.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like there's a scenery .bgl from the South African scenery folder in the Edinburgh scenery folder, or something like that. If they have been somehow mixed up, it won't matter where you put them, or in what order.Just thought I'd mention it, as I didn't see this mentioned above.Personally, I'd delete both sceneries completely, AND remove them from wherever you've put them. Delete them completely. Then, download and install new copies of each. Mike F.

FS determines scenery prority by what's listed in the scenery.cfg, that's what it's for. Having each scenery in its own folder allows you to maintain them or update them or whatever, without touching all the other sceneries. I have a long list of scenereies all in their own individual folders in the Addon scenery folder. Everything is working smoothly.Lee

But the scenery.cfg is built upon the folder system. If you have everything indexed under the Add-on folder, it is the one dictating that priority. If you were to take your scenery folders and move them _out_ of the Add-on directory and place them under the Main FS Scenery directory, you will maintain the same control that you so correctly mention and at the same time, control the priority each scenery area exerts. Currently, you have in effect, _one_ scenery area controlling all of your add-ons....and that could be what is causing your problem. BTW, it should be noted that if you do move them, you will have to enable each scenery via the Scenery Library.

HiI have only become aware of this discussion and can stop any speculation by advising that the problem with the hangars appearing at Edinburgh is due to library objects on my scenery having the same ID as objects on the Johannesburg scenery. I am guessing we have both used a program called Library Maker which should have produced random Guid's but initially this did not happen. It has also caused parts of aircraft carriers to appear at Edinburgh!I believe the answer is not to follow the installation info for the Johannesburg scenery but do as has been suggested already and set up the Johannesburg scenery in it's own scenery folder and keep it away from the FS main scenery folder.I prefer to keep add-ons completely outwith the FS directory which results, I believe, in fewer problems like this.Iain Gallacher

Hello Iain,Glad to see you step in....you may be on the right track; however, I installed these two sceneries the same way I have always installed scenery......separate folders within the FS Scenery Directory so that I maintain control of priority, etc., and enabled via the Library. This method also provides for troubleshooting individual problems should they arise. It also provides for correct operation of Exclude files when these are implemented. In short, I have detected no anomolies or conflicts between these two sets of files despite what you refer to as a possible mix-up of Guid numbering. I'm not sying that this couldn't be the root of the trouble, your explanation makes perfect sense, but I am saying that I detect no conflict. I have tried to get the initial author of this thread to opt for a different file/folder setup more in line with the way I have laid it out above, but there seems to be some reluctance on his part to adopt the suggestion. He appears to choose his methods, yet can only "solve" his situation by changing a slider setting, which obviously indicates that one group of objects between the two scenery areas has a different level of detail set by the applicable author; thus not dealing with the problem at all, but burying it, so to speak.I came across another message thread in this forum discussing a problem with installing a particular scenery that may or may not be lacking in details about said install. MS provides instructions within the help menu in FS. Avsim and flightsim.com both have 'help' for third party installations. Most.....I repeat, most....authors include instructions on how to install their particular set of files. And still, there are those users who insist upon doing things "their" way, disregarding or not even bothering to peruse the 'Readme.txt' and thensit back in wonder when things don't go according to plan. And it seems that the preponderance of problems stems from users dumping everything into either the Main FS directory sans folder separation or into the Add-on Scenery Folder. I enjoy visiting these forums, reading the various reports, hearing of interesting aspects of this hobby, learning of new techniques, etc., and trying to help those who are experiencing difficulties. Your explanation of the Guid numbering problem has been another eye-opener....thanks Iain.
