New Build for Work, FSX, and iRacing

Featured Replies

Hey guys, I am putting together a new build for work, iracing and of course FSX. Curious if you guys think this will be good for FSX.

Windows 7 x64

i7 4770K

8GB RAM

ASUS GTX 770 2GB

Samsung SSD (256GB)

I have a good PSU and cooler for the CPU. What do you guys think?

Thanks for the feedback!

Sure, anything newer on the Intel/nVidia side is a safe bet.  You might need more drive space if you are planning on installing OSX & everything else.  You might double ram size and be sure it's fast--it's so cheap now compared to a few years ago.

System:  9900X3D Noctua NH-D15 G2, MSI Pro 650-P WiFi, G.SKILL  64GB (2 x 32GB) 288-Pin PC RAM DDR5 6000, WD NVMe 2Tb x 1, Sabrent NVMe 2Tb x 1, RTX 4090 FE, Corsair RM1000W PSU, Win11 Home, LG Ultra Curved Gsync Ultimate 3440x1440, Phanteks Enthoo Pro Case, TCA Boeing Edition Yoke & TQ, Cessna Trim Wheel, RTSS Framerate Limiter w/ Front Edge Sync.

Aircraft used in MSFS 2024:  Fenix A320,  Aerosoft CRJ, FBW, WT 787X, I-Fly 737 MAX 8, Citation Longitude.

No need to double your ram unless your work requires so. Make sure its a good brand and fast ram. Timings. I suggest Gskill. Also consider an HDD for everything else not as important as FSX. And OC that 4770K to 4.3 at least. Good luck!

i7 4790K 4.8GHz, 16GB DDR3 1866MHz, EVGA RTX 2080 XC. 1TB M.2 SSD, 4TB HDD, 4K display.

P3D v4.4, FSLabs 320, ORBX Global, Vector, Fly Tampa Airports, FSDT Airports, ActiveSky, REX Sky Force

Also make sure that the PSU you have,  is rated for that Haswell chip, the Haswell has a new power saving feature in sleep mode, which reduces voltage to very low levels that previous PSU's could not do.   If you have C-states enabled,  then the power will shut down if not designed for the haswell.

Check for haswell rated PSU's on it's web site.

You can of course still use an old one, but you must disable C-states in the BIOS. ( or don't let it sleep )

something to be aware of.

Thanks for the feedback. I increased the RAM size to 16GB. The 256GB SSD drive is for Windows and basic FSX/Programs. I have other drives I will use for scenery, etc. Those drives are TB+ each.

Thanks for the feedback. I doubled the RAM (for work). Ordered Gskill. Thanks! OC will be the first order of business!

Looks like I will need to disable the C-States. Thanks for the heads up on this!

If your looking at overclocking, Nick has put together a great guide here;

he does though, say you must use a Haswell rated power supply,  something you may want to research, some do, some don't.   I have a system for only FSX,   when not flying it gets turned off, so I have no need for sleep mode.

You didn't mention what motherboard.?

good luck,

Ron.

Nice to see someone else on here playing iRacing as well!

That system will run FSX great and iRacing as well. However, in iRacing you're always GPU limited so the better the video card the more you can throw at it. I find a mininum in iRacing is 120 FPS which should be no problem with that system, but if you want to crank the AA up then a 780 might help just a bit better because AA in iRacing really takes a big hit on FPS.

The motherboard is an ASUS Z87 Pro. Will definitely look into PSU issue. Thanks!
