FSX / TileProxy detail not as good as the map

Hi All, I have used Ed Truthan's default proxyuser.ini file but have adjusted to use Bing maps as flash earth shows that to be better than yahoo for my area (SW England). I don't know what the resolution is for my area is but the detail of Bing in a web browser is good and property can be identified, even cars on drives (vaguely). However in FSX even with max_lod at 17 (I have tried 15 and 16) the detail even when crawling along with the ultralight is nowhere near the map detail. The scenery from say 2,000 ft is ok, roads can be identified and such, but I was hoping for more.

 

Am I doing something or is my expectation the problem?

How fast is your internet connection, and what are your level mapping settings?

Just tested internet download speed = 4.57 Mbps which is pretty much the average from when I've tested it before.

 

Not sure exactly which settting within proxyuser covers your question so have posted the configuration summary from the command window.

Right, a couple of things to try...

 

Firstly your map version is way behind what it is currently - that may affect the quality of the aerial images given that way back at version 330 the resolution may not have been up to what it is now. So in proxyuser.ini, change the map_version for Bing maps to 1567, then keep an eye on http://aviation.allanville.com/tileproxy/ to keep up with the latest version.

 

If that doesn't work then you may be trying to download too high a resolution tiles for your internet connection - the higher you make your max_level, the more you will be asking of your connection. 4.5Mb is not very fast (similar to mine) and I basically gave up using TP as it couldn't load reasonable resolution tiles at a fast enough rate for my type of flying. I would say straight off that you don't need 30cm tiles for low level VFR - 1.2m or 2.4m would probably do the trick and hammer your internet connection a lot less.

I think you should change some settings in your Proxyuser.ini file.  I have attached mine if you want to try it.  AVSIM did not allow me to attach my Proxyuser.ini file, so I changed it to a "text" file.  After downloading, just delete the ".txt" and place it in your \TileProxy folder.

 

Also, I attached two photos of FSX/Tileproxy near Exeter, England (your area).  You can see the LOD I am getting at 1000ft. AGL.  I tried both level17 (level_mapping=9,10,11,12,14,14,16,17,17)  and level18 (level_mapping=9,10,11,12,14,14,16,17,18,18).  You can definitely see more detail at level18 - at least in the area of Exeter, England... see road markings at the roundabout.  Also, your max_lod=17 (30cm/pixel) is putting an unnecessary load on your PC.  max_lod=16 (60cm/pixel) is what I am using.
