Roger Dodger Aviation keyboard mod

Featured Replies

Hi,

Does anyone have the airliner keyboard modification from Roger Dodger Aviation? I have been looking at this but I have a few questions before I buy it.

-Are the keyboard commands on the 2nd keyboard different to the main one?

-Is it compatible with PMDG?

-What is that EICAS cutout that is pasted onto the numpad?

-Are USB/Wireless keyboards adequate for this project?

Thank you very much in advance.

Thanks,

Kevin L

I've looked at the site before, never had the inclination to spend any money there though.  The keyboard hacks they show look a bit rough in my opinion, and there's better ways to go about it.

From what I can tell, it's simply modding a keyboard to use just the keys which are already assigned as keyboard shortcuts within FSX.  As such, it would be compatible with any add-on which uses / can use keyboard shortcuts.  You could do this yourself by taking an old keyboard, prying out the keys you don't want to use, and glueing new labels on the existing keys which display their function.

The problem I have with this is that keyboard keys are a momentary switch - they don't represent an on/off switch very well, since they don't display state.  It's much neater to have toggle switches wired to any sort of an input board.  You can use an Arduino board with a bit of effort, or else there are quite a few other solutions out there, such as the Bodnar boards, that are recognized as a joystick within FSX.

Okay, looks like that mod isn't the way to go.

Thanks, Jim!

I used the general aviation mod in the past and liked it. As Jimmy RFR states, it is a printable sheet of button labels you paste on a keyboard to simplify the use of keys for flight functions. Inexpensive and effective depending on what you want to do. You could do it yourself and avoid the fee; however, I thought the idea was pretty clever and worth the price at the time.

I eventually purchased several Goflight modules and an Eclipse yoke which gave me almost all the functions I needed without the keyboard so I quit using it.
