Firefox 23-24

Featured Replies

Not quite sure if this the correct place to post this, so, Mods, please feel free to move it.

Can anyone help me as I'm having major, major problems with Firefox 18 through to 24? Despite uninstalling/re-installing several times, I'm having major issues with it in that I could be just reading though the posts here, and all of a sudden it jut freezes-up. Everything is locked. Only a re-boot brings me back, Even then, I could go and have a BBQ by the time it loads a page. I have had to revert to version 11 just to get this post made. But doing that puts my add-ons out of sync. Is anybody else having issues with Firefox's latest browser? I loathe most things Microsoft so will only revert to IE if that is the last browser left standing.

I've really never experienced frequent, hard Firefox crashes like that, but here are some options:

Try looking in the Add/Remove programs area and remove all installed versions of Adobe Flash. You can always re-download it, but it might be something with Flash causing issues.

If you have any, try removing ALL plugins within Firefox, and slowly add them back in over the course of several days to see if one triggers the crashing.

A quick scan with malware bytes can't hurt.

Failing all that, if you're familiar with some of the inner workings of your computer, you can try completely deleting your Firefox profile directory. This will effectively destroy any plugins, browsing history, saved settings, saved passwords, cookies, etc. etc.... hopefully starting your Firefox experience from scratch.

  • Make sure Firefox is closed.
  • On Windows 7, make sure that "Show hidden files, folders, and drives" is turned on in your folder options.
  • Browse to "c:\Users\<Your User Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox"
  • You will see a folder titled " Profiles ", and possibly an .ini file called "profiles.ini"
  • For backup purposes, create a new folder of your choosing and COPY the Profiles folder and profiles.ini file into it.
  • Once backed up, delete the Profiles folder and the profiles.ini file.
  • Start up Firefox - it should act as though it's starting from scratch and hopefully operate more stable.

I've really never seen Firefox crash on that regular of a basis, so my first inclination is that it's a plugin or addon - such as Flash, an ad blocker, or some other non-standard.  If that doesn't help, the only other thing I can think of is nuking the profiles and starting over.

Do this open Firefox whilst holding shift key, click on tab bar select help them troubleshoot button the right had side of tab click reset default. Don't worry you won't lose bookmarks, then restart should be ok.

Sounds like your system is a bit unstable. I have 23.1. Although intially it kept crashing and resuming from the last known page, that was down to a couple of instabilities in the system and nothing to do with FF. In effect FF was reacting. Go through your system. Use a registry cleaner and or BlueScreen/view if you have total wipeouts.

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

Cannot be system instability because I can surf till the cows come home with IE8-10 and also with Avant Browser. Logic tells me that if my system, which has just been completely re-installed from ground up on an SSD-based system, was unstable, then it would affect video editing, and the afore-mentioned Browsers.

But I will take on board all comments/suggestions/etc.

Firefox usually suggest going into Firefox safe mode. It could be a problem with one of your FF add-ons. They do sometimes conflict. I tried out the Private window add-on (not that it is really neccessary!) and that kep crashing the browser so I ditched it!

The only add-ons I have are Ad Block Plus, and the eBay sidebar.

I reckon for now, I will ditch Firefox as Avant Browser so far has not once gone CTD and I can access all my Firefox bookmarks without a hitch.

It was happening to me I did what i posted and it's fixed.

There is one other possibility

Your HD may be running out of space!! It must be bursting at the seams with VC10 photos taken during these last few days !!!!!

WIsh I was around these aircraft to take loads of photos. Sadly, they are all far away from me. As regards HD running out of space. Not likely with a 1Tb back-up HD and 100Gb available on the SSD.

'Tis a great pity that the VC10 will fly no more :-(

It's a measure of how well they were built and the attention to safety that they have been flying for so many years.

Wouldn't it be nice if some developer could take it on board to make a real good FSX version? Can only...........dream(sigh)

Well, it's difficult enough doing it for fs9!!!! Just think of the split system technology - every system, control surface and gauge has to br categorised - i.e. does it work off the electrical system and/or the hydraulic system. In case of failure which of the electrical buses is functional. If the Elrat has to be deployed what control surfaces work. So it's not just a case of <Value>(A:Electrical master battery, bool) 1 == </Value> for example!! It's that plus a whole raft of other factors. I have on my desk diagrams of the complete electrical system. Where ever there is a component or a switch I have to put a series of number codes to indicate different sources of power. These number codes are then translated into xml. Each component then has to be tested for failures one by one. It took three months just to get the engines to agree to the limitations schedule.

Also there are notable differences between types. My next update will be specific only to the Super VC10 model. As for the C1K that too has major differences. The fuel panel for example. It has a fin tank as does the Super, but because of it's extra air to air refuelling capability the fuel is managed quite differently!

And, because all this is based on a freeware model the updates are free too.

So for now you'll just have to be content with FS9 (at least I get 60fps with fs9 :-)  )

I'm also working on a video which will show the checklists in action, ATC, cabin/ground crew interaction and correct handling of the VC10. That too is a bit of a nightmare as Fraps only does 4mb chunks and each chunk then has to be separately sound synched. Then these 4mb chunks have to be joined and converted into a smaller format (without loosing resolution).

All in all quite a lot of work for one guy!!!!
