Back when FSX came out Aces had an article about how they used mathematical Tessellation techniques specifically for the FSX rendering engine, mainly to ensure the Earth tiles edged up to each other perfectly without gaps. Hardware Tessellation support in DX11 is what came next.

Ah the nVidia 340.34 beta drivers ... hmmm ... I wonder if I turn Tess off they'll work?  They were very fast ... 50% improvement, but I guess when 30% of the scene isn't rendered that seems to help with fps :)

Hehe, yes Rob, you are spot-on there. Makes a nice demonstration of the basic earth tiling.
