MFD "comm" functions

Featured Replies

Hello,

I can't use the functions in the "comm" part of the MFD, to get the ATIS of arrival airport for example and I was just wondering if there's an option to activate or so,  and if it's necessary to have an ATC add-on to use it ?

I know functions are available depending on what airline you fly etc.. But even with PMDG livery nothing works.

Can anyone help ?

They currently have no function.  There's nothing to communicate with.  Nobody has made a system that handles those requests.

Even get the ATIS is impossible ? And what about the "MFD communications functions" part in the FCOMv2.pdf ? In my MFD nothing in the "comm" part can be pushed. Is it normal ?

Where would it get the ATIS from?  Last I checked, there isn't a single source that covers the entire world.

That FCOMv2 is from the real aircraft.  It has whole sections that detail the crew rest area and emergency escapes, too.

As mentioned already - yes - because this feature is not modeled.  There's nothing for it to communicate with.  Until someone comes up with a system for it to communicate with, it can't work.

Okay I understand now, Thanks.

Would be nice to get weather information messages sourced from a weather engine (Active sky etc). Maybe when the SDK is released assuming it has comm functions.

Doesn't the FAA site that stores the domestic METAR dialins also have the rest of the globe too? You can put foregin stations into the websites search field for both METAR and TAF. I haven't had the interest in decompiling the page source to figure out how it does it tho.

What's missing is a server system to download that data and reply to requests from this CDU.

Course, converting that to an ATIS is a different discussion.

Exactly.  The FAA data only goes so far, too.  It's been expanded over the years, but if you're going to offer something, it should be well thought through and complete.

The issue is that you can't, really.  The only way you'd be able to do it would be to pull D-ATIS from the actual source.  ATIS info has a lot of stuff in there that computers can't just do on their own.  As an example, sometimes you'll see IAD working opposite the "logical" landing direction due to conflicts with DCA.  Additionally, computers will choose all kinds of runways that real ATC nearly never use because of the inconvenience they impose (Runway 1L at IAD being an example).

You could certainly create a passable one, just like the default FSX ATC ATIS, but if I'm pulling real world METARs, I want the real world D-ATIS, too.
