November 11, 201312 yr I enjoy flying jets and mostly fly pmdg 737ngx and 777. I was wondering what the value of topcat is. I own pfpx and love using it for flight planning. However, I am wondering what topcat would add to my experience if anything. I have watched some videos on it and other than giving a few values to enter into the fmc I am not sure how the information would actually impact my flight. For example, if I click for a derated takeoff with topcat I could enter the temperature. How does that affect my flight?
November 11, 201312 yr TOPCAT add an additional level of realism to your flights. TOPCAT primary function is to do takeoff landing performance. With the click of button it will calculate the optimal takeoff solution for a runway factoring by optimizing flap setting and engine thrust, although this might not be necessary for FS real companies do this in order to achieve the most efficient operations. It will also adjust the max takeoff weight for the most limiting constraint ie, structural, climb limits or landing limits to name a few. It will also calculate required landing distance and max allowable landing weight. Although not available for the 777X, I would have to say its an essential flight planning addon especially when paired with PFPX. I would even say I limit myself to only flying aircraft which are included in TOPCAT.
November 11, 201312 yr TOPCAT is a great addition (would be a great addition if once updated) if you would like to fly a bit more realistic. It is always fun for me to search for a smaller airport and takeoff or land there with a fully loaded 737 e.g. It is thrilling to see the end of the runway coming nearer and nearer and waiting that the bird will start to rotate (or coming to a halt). And these datas, TOPCAT will compute for you. Big disadvantage: there is no further development for TOPCAT since years now. The dev promised it after PFPX is released, but that is now also some month out .... maybe we see a new 777 profile this years, but I honestly doubt that.
