GPU Upgrade advice needed please

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I currently have an Nvidia GTX470 (1.28GB GDDR5 memory) GPU and although I don't have the money for a top of the range card was wondering what the next step up would be so I can look at buying a used one on eBay.

Many thanks

Daz

I need something sensibly priced that the family can get me for my Xmas present. Something around the $200 mark used on eBay.

At least with nVidia cards, their numbering system will help guide you to relative power.

The latest series models are 7xx, next oldest is 6xx, then 5xx and the level of your current card 4xx. Within each series are the steps, such as 780, 770,760. The higher the middle number will translate to faster performance. So when going to eBay you might find two cards; a 670 and a 580. The 580 should have more memory on the card and will probably be performance-equal or better to the 670. But take a 680 vs a 580 and the 680 will perform faster and may or may not have more memory.

Since you have a budget level to work with you can start to browse the offerings at eBay. All things being equal, say a 570 vs a 670, memory and speed much the same, then I would be a proponent of buying the newer technology, the 670 card.

You really need to match the video card to the processor you have, otherwise you could be just throwing money away.

What CPU do you have currently?

I have an i7 2.66 overclocked to 3.36

I had a i7 2.66 overclocked to 3.36 for two years running a GTX670 and it was pretty good.

I ran Nvidia Surround triple displays with it.

The GTX660Ti is supposed to be good too.

Be careful before you spend money on a card you don't need. I also have an I7 920 and I use an EVGA GeForce GTX 285 video card. I presently use LM P3D Version 1.4 and consistently get 30-40 FPS. In preparation of the upcoming release of Version 2.0, which will require a DX 11 video card, I replaced my old card with a EVGA GeForce GTX 760. I didn't see any improvement in my video and no increase in FPS. But I also wasn't expecting to based upon the fact that the GPU and CPU are very dependent on one another. Based upon my research on these forums and elsewhere, FSX and P3D versions prior to Version 1.4, are very dependent on the CPU for performance. So there are limitations to performance based upon CPU, not GPU. If you plan on moving to P3D Version 2.0, then upgrading your GPU makes sense since version 2.0 takes advantage of the GPU. If your GPU doesn't support DX 11 you will need to upgrade your GPU to one that is DX 11 to use Version 2.0 of P3D. If you can increase your budget to $250.00 you can purchase the GTX 760 which is DX 11. If you don't plan on using P3D Version 2.0 save your money and invest in an upgrade to you CPU. All this info is based upon what I have read and what I experienced in upgrading my video card.
