Should I get a AMD?

Featured Replies

I am planing on a new FSX build when RAM gets cheaper

my budget is about 500 bucks which HAS TO include windows 7

the AMD processor I want is http://www.microcenter.com/product/414754/A10_6800K_Black_Edition_41GHz_Quad-Core_Socket_FM2_Boxed_Processor

and I want to get about 8gb of RAM when it gets cheap again

If I get this processor and continue using my NVIDIA GTX 260 will I be able to run FSX with addons like NYC X? and the PMDG NGX? along with some of the fly tampa scenery?

Thanks. I want honest opinions that are based on fact rather than a intel persons opinion

My current specs are

intel Q9550

4gb of ram

NVIDIA GTX 260

I have been doing some research and I have been going through passmarks cpu list http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php I looked at the list and saw that if I divide the performance number by the number of cores I get a number of 1250 passmark performance scores per core. Should I get an I3 because that means that if I get a dual core 4th gen I3 4340 I can get a performance of 2300 passmark performance scores per core.

Probably a bit difficult to answer as most of the FSX guys use an Intel CPU excluding myself. The A10 can be OC'ed to a fine clock speed and has some improvements on single threads I guess.

I have a FX 6300 but mobo has gone for replacement so cannot even give you Piledriver performance for FSX.

I don't look at benchmarks much but that is just my opinion.

Hopefully some member may be able to answer that for you.

yeah I am not planning on overclcoking because it can cause problems for the CPU. But will a Core I3 have better FSX performance because of the lower cores than a Core I5 or the AMD A10 that I am looking at?

I am not too sure about the i3's .  I would suggest do some more research between the A10 and the i3's.

Performance does not scale linearly as a function of the number of cores.  Far from it, in fact.  So this metric you've devised is likely to mislead you.

The conventional wisdom is still better performance from the intel CPUs clock-for-clock.  I'm sure people will be interested in an objective review if you build with an AMD.

That said, I don't know of *any* CPU that will run FSX well at stock speeds.  Mid 4 GHz range seems to be the sweet spot, at least for intels from Nehalem onward.

Look at an FX-8350 for $199

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284

its worth it the A series of processors aint all that great you could also look at an for $159 FX-8320. Vishera is alot better core architecture the one the A10 unit your looking at does

Take a look at this a complete system for $519 inc operating system with FX-8320

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883229361

And this one for $570 with FX-8350

As for overclocking nothing to be scared of. My FX-8350 is running at 4.5ghz and I've never had an issue and I only had to raise the voltage a little for a stable OC

How is fsx on the 8350 ? there are some youtube videos show excellent performance.

I'm always in the 30FPS range except when I'm in the PMDG 777 at a large payware airport with bad weather then it'll drop into the low teens but I run DX10 so its pretty smooth even at 15FPS. I looking forward to P3D V2 as it will take advantage of all 8 CPU cores which should put me in the same league as the I7 4770K

So should I forget about the a10 then?

There's nothing AMD has to offer that will provide much of a boost in FSX compared to your current C2Q

So save a bit more and get an I5 4560K or be ready to be disappointed

Yeah I mean I am also hearing that they are coming with P3D V2 and I may just get a new system when that happens. I also think ram is very expensive right now so I am just going to wait it out for a bit.
