4770K or 4670K

Featured Replies

I may be switching motherboard and CPU soon, as I need to set my son up with a PC. Therefore...

As hyper threading has no advantage in FSX or most games, I generally turn it off, and achieve better overclocks at lower temp. So the questions...

Does it really make sense to go for the 4770K, when HT won't be used?

Does the extra 2mb cache of the 4770K really offer any appreciable benefit in FSX, or games for that matter?

I would be interested in your opinions chaps.

Hi Martin

I am not sure, as you now a have a second hobby Overclocking.

My experienses is in some eyes little odd for example Delidd have no gain in OC only keep the temp

down with weaker cooling, have delidd 3770k, 4670k and 4770K not the best cpu:s in the lotteria but not

100mhz gain in OC.

Not gone dellid any Haswell anymore, and you have the warrenty intact if someting go wrong

I have 3 bench systems based on 4670k 4770k and 4930k and a sim pc with a qute good 4670k i replaced the bad 4770k.

Have binned 8pcs 4670k to find a good one that one do 5ghz with h110 @ 1.32v 3d stable and +6ghz LN2 cooling.

4770k binned 15 pcs last week six costarica with same batch find one good 5ghz 1.36v 4cores/8 treads 3d stable but not sure its better cpu than my best 4670k.

As you see the most important is to be lucky in the Chip lotteria i think best bung for bucks is the 4670k

A few months ago I upgraded to a 4770k and NVidia 780gts. I am pleased with the result. FSX very seldom has problems running anything smoothly now. For me it has been money well spent. In the big picture going to a 4770k from a 4670 from a cost perspective is minor.

Well it's £72 difference here Dave, in the UK.

That would make a good contribution toward an SSD.

I have test 4670k and 4770k on the same hardware only diff the CPU run fsmark11 the

Fps difference was less than 0.5fps with an avg of 50fps

Thanks Westman.

I know Nick Needham claims the extra 2mb cache of the i7 is worth it, but I'm not so sure.

The other point is overclocking... how well the 4670K overclocks compared to the 4700k.

Does the i7 overclock better due to speed binning?

Thanks Westman.

I am not sure how intel bin them.

All tests run on H110 cooler.

When i start bin a Haswell a start with tthe same bios settings on both 4770k (HT disabled in the first tests) and 4670k.

Have a Vcore at 1,33v that the highest vcore i want at 5ghz.

Start is multi 45 if they not boot at that speed no more tests unintrested cpu crap.

when sorted out the CPU:s that do 4.8 and higher i test them more for example the IMC.

About 25-30% fail to booth to 4.5ghz same for 4670k and 4770k, one observation is that the 4770k is closer

alot of them doing 4.7ghz  the diff is 50-100mhz avarge advantage for the 4770k .

But the best one I have is a 4670k.

One more thing is that 4770k seems to have a better binned IMC but all do 2400mhz cl9 some 4670 fail at 2666mhz, all 4770k that do over 4.5ghz pass 2666mhz agianst 60% for the 4670K only 20% pass 2800mhz to 50% for 4770K.

I hope this help you , but the biggest parameter is to be lucky in the Chip lotteria.

Thanks Westman. I'm swaying toward the i7. I reckon I can afford to do it, so just in case I regret going for the i5 at a later date, or in the future I find myself in need of HT, that's probably the best bet.
