December 31, 200421 yr I am finally flying twin engine planes in FS after only flying single engine props. I have a CH yoke and pedals.I want to use the yoke as much as possible for the controls. Right now, the Throttle, Prop, Mixture and Cowl Flaps control both engines. Does anyone know if there is an easy to make it so that a key press and hold (i.e. Ctrl), along with one of these controls, will only affect one engine at a time? That way the default will be both engines, but pressing Ctrl and using the Throttle say will only affect the left, and pressing Alt and using the Throttle will only affect the right. Any other tips of configuring controls to fly twin engine aircraft would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Scott
January 1, 200521 yr No you cannot hold down a key and make one of the levers control only one engine. The CH Control manager can be set up to switch between three modes while in use but this is best utilized with one of their fighter throttles that has the LEDs to indicate which control set is being used. You could probably assign a shift key to the yoke and switch between both engines controlled by levers, left engine, then right engine, then back to both.A solution that would be much easier and at least give you the sensation of hearing the engines in and out of phase (cool in multi-engines) is assign the throttle lever on the yoke to the left engine, the prop lever to the right engine, the mixture lever to the propellor (all, not individual) and set the aircraft realism to utilize automixture. When you can swing getting the Throttle Quadrant it will give you what you are looking for and the longer lever throws allow for much more precise adjustment, you won't regret spending the extra money.Zane Dr Zane Gard Sr Staff Reviewer AVSIM Private Pilot ASEL since 1986 IFR 2010 AOPA 00915027 American Mensa 100314888
January 1, 200521 yr Thanks Zane for the reply and suggestion. I like leaning and enriching the mixture on the single pistons, so I think I will just keep them all together for the twins. I think that the only reason that I will need to keep them separate is just the startup and taxing. For that I will just control the levers with the mouse. If I start flying twins and 4 engine planes alot, I will look into the CH Throttle Quadrant, but at $200 that is pretty pricey.Scott
January 1, 200521 yr Moderator The solution is so simple, that it's being overlooked...Press E,1 and the levers will only work with engine 1.Press E,2 and the levers will only work with engine 2.Press E,1,2 and the levers will control both engines...Simple! :-lol Fr. January 1, 200521 yr Thanks Bill! That is simple. Since I had mapped 1-9 to display and hide panels (I hate having to hit the shift key all of the time) it wasn't working. But then I realized that I just had to map the F1-F4 keys for the Select item 1, Select item 2, etc. Now I hit E+F1, E+F2, E+F1+F2 and it works great. The only drawback as Zane pointed out is that the controls jump to the setting on my CH Yoke when I select a new engine. But since I don't want to spend $200 on a throttle quadrant, I can live with that.Scott
January 1, 200521 yr Moderator Well then, I'm glad you found a way to make the solution work for you! ;)Happy New Year! Fr. Bill AOPA Member: 07141481 AARP Member: 3209010556 Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
January 1, 200521 yr >with the mouse. If I start flying twins and 4 engine planes>alot, I will look into the CH Throttle Quadrant, but at $200>that is pretty pricey.I paid $129 for mine on sale a few weeks ago... it's back up to $149 at that store, but Provantage.com has it for $132.Dan
January 1, 200521 yr Author And on that note... the CH throttle quadrant is a GREAT addition!I got one for Christmas, and I'm having a great time with it. The ability to assign seperate engines, mixture, and pitch in almost any combination makes it worth the price. Then, there's the additional 6 2 position switches that you can assign any function to. (I use mine for autopilot functions and engine starters.) I've read some stuff on these forums about problems with this setup, but mine works perfectly right out of the box. I can't recommend this enough as a good solution for multiple engine issues. And then there's my new Track IR 3....outstanding!
