January 1, 201412 yr Happy new year everybody.I made up a new pc for christmas since my old one with Windows XP is going to be too much old (and XP not supported anymore in a few months). This new one is a Windows 7 64bit Home edition, and I decided to migrate from FS9 to FSX (or give it a chance, at least). I bought a FSX Gold edition package and tried to install it. Unfortunately, it remains stuck at the installshield window, and I can't go further in spite of all my attempts. I searched all around internet, tried some solutions proposed (installed MS Visual 2010, MSXML 4.0, launched setup.exe as administrator, tried to set setup.exe compatibility to XP and launched it again) but no way.Is there somewhere a complete list of operations to follow in order to be sure I tried anything possible, before I resign myself to give back the package? I can't believe I'm the only one who can't fly FSX on a W7 64bit.Thanks for the help.Francesco
January 1, 201412 yr Win 7 doeant have dx9 so you will need to download and install that. Here some more info http://forums.simviation.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=68473#p470518 WIn7 related http://www.simforums.com/forums/topic34141_post198187.html#198187
January 1, 201412 yr Author Thanks, but about DirectX, I have Dx11 installed, and as far as I can see through your links, they are more XP-Win7 installation problems or clean FSX installation issues than FSX-Win7 installation ones...My first problem is why it doesn'y install, then I'm going to see performance issues.
January 1, 201412 yr Francesco, After your Win7 install but before the FSX install, did you do all the windows updates? If you have any kind of antivirus running, I would turn it off during the FSX install. Finally, are you installing FSX to the default location c:\program files... ? Strongly recommend you install to an alternate location such as C:\fsx. Search for "FSX file permissions" to find out how to set permissions on this folder. Good luck and happy new year. January 1, 201412 yr Try turning off Windows 7 User Account Control. Sometimes running as administrator is not enough. Also check out another couple of potential issues: Are you able to make a manual restore point in Win 7 system protection? If not then do a web search and see if you can gain back that ability. I run Win 7 64 bit and this is a constant issue for me. I have had a number of program installations hang up because either the installer or Windows 7 attempts to make a restore point and hangs there. That happens in the background and you don't see it taking place. I sometimes have to delete all previous restore points. A web search will provide info on how to do that. One issue is how much storage space Windows 7 provides for storing restore point. You should be able to find instructions on the web on how to increase the space. One issue that I believe contributes to ability to create restore points is the presence at the time of plug-in storage devices such as memory cards (SD cards and the like), thumb drives, etc. I now unplug/remove all of these from my system when running Windows Updates (which I select manually) or installing software and that seems to help. Hi Henry, yes, my Win7 is updated and no antivirus running. About where to install FSX, I'm stuck long before I can select the location to install. Now I'm trying to copy both first two DVD on the desktop and launch setup from there, let's see if it works this way /-). UAC is off (slider full down). Thanks

January 1, 201412 yr Author Well, I copied the DVDs on the desktop, launched setup and it worked! Thank you everybody, now begins the subtle art of tweaking FSX, I'm ready to read all the pages I thought I would never look at when I was an happy fs9 user :-) Francesco
January 1, 201412 yr Win7 may have dx11 but FSX uses dx9, it has dx10 preview but that comes with many issues.
