January 3, 200521 yr Happy new year to you all,I'd be very happy indead if anyone could help me get rid of the - ..exit runway when able .. bull.Never heard that in real live atc-conversations.Greetings,Frans
January 3, 200521 yr I'm not positive on this, but I doubt it's possible with MSFS's ATC system. It would require MSFS to estimate how far down the runway you'd eventually roll and then assign the proper exit. While telling you which taxiway to exit the runway on is the norm, there are exceptions, especially at airports having a slow period. I've been given similar directions in real life at Spokane International during a slow point in the day (ussually seems to occur weekdays in the mid to late afternoon)On another note: This seems more suited to the MSFS forums than this one.----------------------------------------------------------------John S. January 4, 200521 yr It is not uncommon to get an open-ended runway instruction similar to "exit when able" in real life. Just depends on the situation, but in the case of FS9 I don
January 4, 200521 yr Author Hi Frans,If you would like to able to change some of the phrases that MSFS uses I would highly recommend you install Editvoicepack. The current version is 3.1 and it is still freeware. You can find it at: www.editvoicepack.com or in the flightsim and avsim library. With it you can choose between FAA and ICAO phraseology and you have the option of going through the ICAO phrases and picking and choosing the ones you want to keep or not use. You also have the option of speeding up the rate at which the phrases are spoken which can be very helpful in busy traffic areas especially if you are using some of the add-on AI traffic programs (the faster speed sounds more realistic IMHO).Enjoy,Zane Dr Zane Gard Sr Staff Reviewer AVSIM Private Pilot ASEL since 1986 IFR 2010 AOPA 00915027 American Mensa 100314888
January 4, 200521 yr In my experience it hasn't been all that common, but in my experience so far, most of the towered airports I've landed at were busy and needed to maintain control of the traffic on the ground thus a need to get off on a certain taxiway so as not to play chicken with other aircraft. I do know at Spokane Int'l though that they will give that instruction if it's not all that busy.----------------------------------------------------------------John S. January 4, 200521 yr Ive been given that option by ATC many times in real life. Though I havent been given it everytime I land and then given a taxiway to exit like it does in game.
January 4, 200521 yr That's what I mentioned in my first post. It lacks the calculations to determine your landing roll to make that decision, if it could then it would be usable for other features to like traffic separation to help eliminate this problem with go-arounds at busy airports.----------------------------------------------------------------John S. January 4, 200521 yr Do you mean changing it to a more realistic phraseology?Until MSFS's ATC AI is accurately able to predict the length of your landing rollout--taking imperfect late landings into consideration--so that the controller can assign you a specific taxiway and direction to exit the runway on ("exit right on taxiway X" or whatever the phrasing would be), I'm afraid we're stuck with the generic "exit runway when able" and "turn next taxiway" instructions to remind you to please vacate the runway as soon as you're able.As for removing the message entirely so the controller won't nag, I don't know. Could always judge your braking on the rollout so you can choose a taxiway and get on it as fast as safely able, or use editvoicepack to alter the message soundfiles (ie. if the "turn next taxiway" and "exit runway when able" are each in one soundfile, replace the soundfiles with a soundfile of silence)... I've just gotten used to ignoring the nagging as I try to vacate the runway as fast as I safely can... Declared weather: FSX: ASN / FS9: ASE
January 4, 200521 yr My favorite exit story is when the controller advises after getting a "braking action is Nil" report responding with "Last turn IF able..." instruction.Actually the "Exit when able" call is nice when landing on a long runway such as KABQ or at an airport where the terminal parallels the active runway...you can ease up on the roll-out and turn off closer to your gate than exiting short and taxiing at a snail's pace for 15 minutes on a congested taxi-way or ramp environment.Granted in the MSFS world the "gate" assignments are off but you get the picture. It is always a good part of any arrival briefing prior to the approach to include not only how you plan to arrive on the runway but also how you arrive at the gate. The original post does not indicate what country/environment he is flying in and non-US ATC procedures may not allow for this flexibility. Tim__757
