January 16, 201412 yr I'm trying to convert a bunch of FS8 and FS9 AI aircraft repaints to an FSX native format so I can use these textures also in Prepar3D v2. Anyone got a tutorial on what to do once the texture is loaded into DXTBmp, and what format to save it in? The only thing I have understood so far is that I should keep the BMP file extension, even though I change the file format. Thanks for any help! January 18, 201412 yr .DDS is the correct texture format for FSX, and I believe there is nvidia dds plugin for photoshop.
January 19, 201412 yr Author Thanks, but what parameters to use? Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
January 19, 201412 yr Outside of any gains from adding any missing alpha textures or mips you'll find a nil increase in performance by changing the textures from BMP to DDS. There are many good threads on this over on the Alpha India Group forums. They are the best AI painters out there, it's a wealth of knowledge and a great place to learn. i7-13700KF, 32gb DDR4 3200, RTX 4080, Win 11, MSFS 2024

Almost every good painter is now releasing dds files for FSX. Freeware developer Pompeii, Italy and Mount Vesuvius (pompeii_italy.zip) and A380 Flight plans (ai_a380_flightplans_redux.zip).
January 19, 201412 yr Author I'm more concerned about incompatible textures. Some older textures used in the oldest WOAI packages can cause a CTD in P3D. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
January 19, 201412 yr With that being said. Almost every good painter is now releasing dds files for FSX. You're very correct. It's becoming the standard, but that being said older bmp textures work fine in FSX and p3d. Some older textures used in the oldest WOAI packages can cause a CTD in P3D. Are you sure it's the textures? Or is it the models? I've found most of my crashing issues in P3d V2 is with the older AI models. i7-13700KF, 32gb DDR4 3200, RTX 4080, Win 11, MSFS 2024
January 20, 201412 yr Author Are you sure it's the textures? Or is it the models? I've found most of my crashing issues in P3d V2 is with the older AI models. Could very well be, but incompatible textures was the explenation I was given by the WOAI folks over at their forums. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
January 20, 201412 yr incompatible textures was the explenation I was given by the WOAI folks over at their forums. Interesting, but I'm still skeptical. I haven't had many problems with AI textures in p3d v2, but certain models will crash p3d the second it attempts to render it. The texture problems I've seen are more from them not being saved with alpha etc, but they don't cause P3d to crash. I've split the models that I know don't work in p3d into their own folder so that p3d doesn't load them, but FSX still does. Some of the more widely used AI models that will crash P3d v2 that I've found so far are : HTAI B1900D (oddly the C model does work) HTAI Beech C90 HTAI Beech 99 Dee Waldron and HTAI Shorts 360 Dee Waldron HS748 Any of the HTAI Cessna Singles (the C208B works fine) HTAI Beechjet/ Hawker 400 or Mitsubishi MU3 i7-13700KF, 32gb DDR4 3200, RTX 4080, Win 11, MSFS 2024
January 20, 201412 yr Author Thanks for the head's up! I'll have to check what aircraft are included with Regional Airlines of Morocco. It was the package that caused my crash. Simmerhead - Making the virtual skies unsafe since 1987!
