January 18, 201412 yr My typical X-Plane 10 session... I do not have a lot of time to spend simulating flight. My typical flight simulation sessions last less than 1 hr, sometimes only 5 minutes. When I buy a simulator just for the sake of enjoying it's flight dynamics, like I did for instance with DCS World, then the sessions can last even less time - the time for a short circuit or a few maneuvers and a landing where I am specially concentrated in enjoying the flight / systems modelling. With X-Plane 10, the temptation to fly the airliners has equalled the one I had when using Microsoft Flight Simulator. I have presently in my fleet the FF 777-200ER, Peter's A321, SSG's 748-i and the QPAC A320. The Airbuses are easier to take on short / medium range flights accross Europe, usually ending in Lisbon because I'm lazzy and do not have the time to get the STARs and APP charts for other European airports... With the QPAC there's an additional advantage - the "Jump to next waypoint" feature you can use once you're cruising. Yesterday I arrived home and switched ON the PC, started SkyVector to check the METARs at Toulouse and Lisbon ( that one I knew very well :-) ) and placed my QPAC A320 at RW 14R LFBO. FSBuild provided the flight-plan, a nice program to calculate the V-Speeds that one of you has kindly provided was my "TOPCAT", and in less than 5 minutes I was ready for departure. It was night, and I was using real time and weather... Taking off from Toulouse at night was great, just as night is, simply gorgeous in X-Plane 10. But once the SID handed me to my initial route fix I was wondering about the beautiful detail of the Pyrenees I was being prevented to profit from, specially now with that REMARKABLE HD Mesh V2 by Andras! There was an almost full Moon, but contrarily to what happens in MSFS, the Moonlight in X-Plane is not "strong" enough to iluminate the scenery .... I should be able to see the Mountains around me... Anyway, no problem, I set the simulator clock time to afternoon, and VOILÃ!!!! There I was over those beautifully rendered mountains. Weather was great too, with at least 2 layers of clouds, stratified, some of them near the mountain ridges. The effect was simply great. In between I was leaving the cockpit to wash the dishes and prepare my dinner :-) The first officer was doing his job, and whenever I returned to the cockpit the flight was progressing without any quirks. As soon as I reached FL350 I was able to use the Jump to Next Waypoint option. I got the soup, got back to cockpit while the toasts were getting ready, and a sequence of "jump to nest waypoint", bite the toast, jump to next waypoint... followed with my initial STAR fix soon getting available, just after 25' when, if the flight had been made without this jump, more than 2 hrs would have been required! I finished my dinner, unfroze the sim, and flew the approach, all by hand, following the precise FPA/FD guidance down to the rw. When the GS for rw 21 at LPPT was intercepted, I swiched to manual throttle, just as I have seen the crew doing on the many jumpseat rides I did on buses... The scenery in Lisbon is that great freeware recently made available at the .ORG. I also use there SimHeaven's Lisbon ZL17 already Mesh V2 upgraded :-) There is simply nothing closer to real than this, for free!!! in any sim I have used! Only with X-Plane 10!!!! ( a clear exclamation of those infected by accute jcom'itis...) What a great flight simmer life I am living! I've yet to try any heavies in X-Plane, apart from the Saab 340 (If you count that as a heavy) My typical simming session is opening skyvector.com, and planning a route anywhere between 50-100NM. I then add the route into my Nexus 7, connect it up to X-Plane and off I go. I really enjoy low-and-slow flights, but anything longer than an hour and I start to lose my attention. Also, another way I choose locations to fly is by opening up openstreetmaps and seeing how well populated the areas are around the airports. I love scenic approaches and landings, so I rarely fly to barren airports. In FSX, typically I used to stick to the PNW and GA flights, although I had the NGX and used to fly for a virtual airline around Europe
January 18, 201412 yr Author I think my preferred X-Plane airliner right now is the QPAC A320, closely followed by Peters's A321 and the SSG 748i. I will never be able to use the Saab :-( Moved to Linux, and there's no Gizmo for Linux ..... January 18, 201412 yr It would be interesting to compare frame rates on Windows vs Linux. In the past I've read reports of better frame rates on Linux. "Society has become so fake that the truth actually bothers people".

Just as people moving from FSX/P3D to X-Plane can keep both on their systems, maybe you could keep a separate Windows boot partition or drive in addition to Linux? I myself spend my most of my computer time on my Mac, but for X-Plane I move to a Windows box... I had philosophical issues giving Microsoft my hard earned coin, but in the end I gritted my teeth and paid for a (discounted) OEM Win7 license.

Sure, I have a windows partition, but no X-Plane installed in it. Actually it is used by my wife, and reserved for DCS World and IL2 BoS testing... Ah! ELITE v8.6 too I didn't notice any gain in fps so far with X-plane in Linux. I look forward to be able to install my new joystick when it get's fixed with new pots ( 2nd hand, offered by a friend :-), a Hotas Cougar since he upgraded to the new Warthog...)
