Be nice to see poll results on this if you don't mind sharing your opinions.   I'm on the fence on upgrading, in part because I like the one-piece all-in-one solution that REX3 E+ offers, and also haven't heard enough from users about water and other texture quality w/ REX4.  And drive space is a consideration, though a minor one.

Thanks in advance!

May be it will be better if separate  Poll for  FSX and Prepar3D v2.

REX4 for P3Dv2 without doubt, if for nothing more than the water animations, which work far better than REX3 on this platform. As for clouds, I think its subjective... the choice in REX+OD is staggering, and is not matched in REX4, but unless you chop and change all the time, its no big deal, and I would say the quality is much the same... there is enough in REX4 to keep most people happy however.

One thing I do like more in REX3 is the ability to change the colour of the water, which you cannot do in 4... I find all the REX4 water colours too bright and blue for our north Atlantic waters.

Personally I would not be without both.

Go for it!  I'm currently not upgrading for anything in FSX, though I know REX works in both, but it's primarily P3DV2 for me these days.

Thanks for your replies folks I bought it and so far enjoying it.  Nice to be able to load themes so fast that adds a lot.  The developer suggested he will add a new feature to allow us to search for themes optimized or designed for V2.  Water textures are better for sure, but there is still room for improvement for sure.  I wonder if there isn't a real technical obstacle to having a texture be designed optimally for both 3D wave animation under 500ft and higher altitude visualization.

Cheers,

Noel

Rex Essentials is more than adequate. Paying again for similar textures does not make sense to me. Customers usually fail to assess the incremental cost versus what they have while assuming new is better. Is it better enough to justify the new cost? Not for me.

Which is fair enough... Personally, having bought REX many years ago [day one], and then having seen the product updated, including a huge new texture pack for no extra cost makes me feel I have plenty of value out of the package to justify the relatively small cost of getting REX4... esp. when it is properly optimised for P3Dv2, which REX3 is not. If I only ran FSX I would feel less inclined however.

Its possible this is the case. The water in v2 esp. with REX4 can looks amazingly good from the right angles, but from others its looks far worse than FSX... for me its the glassy reflections, esp. of the clouds that look poor; you can have a rough sea which looks like someone has placed a glass sheet over the top. I hope this is something LM work on in the future.... or, some clever souls like the guys who made FSWC do something similar for v2.

REX 4 is not worth it in my opinion. Worse water textures and colour and the clouds all look like "i've been there before".

It has a few nice addons such as different lightning textures and a nice set of airport signs, but to me it was a waste of money overall.

I actually took my own poll after using REX4 in P3DV2 and rated water as moderately better and clouds as slightly better.  But truly, the real value beyond the water (haven't seen lightening) is the superior bump mapping & some better sky colors, but ultimately the near instant theme loading.  This alone provided the value for me.

I don't use cloud reflections.  I do agree w/ your water assessment so far, which again makes me wonder if there aren't difficulties getting textures designed to work well for 3D wave action and yet look good from lots of angles & higher altitude.
