Scenery Crashes and Screen Goes Black using FSX Menu

Recommended Posts

Hi I'm using FSX Gold edition with accelerator and PMDG B737NGX

When I start a flight then go to use the menu bar to maybe change gate location or other feature the screen either blackens or the scenery is distorted resembing a desert at night and of course the flight is rouined.

2 days ago I had the windows 7 completely removed, files removed and reinstalled, yet straight after reinstalling the FSX even before adding any add-on airportst the problem re-occurred.

I am using the uiautomationcore dll  i don't know if there is a set version of this i should be using, also heard it should not be kept in the fsx folder not sure on this, problem occurs only after using the menu bar, also every time I exit FSX I get the fatal error message and FSX restarts itself.

Would be most grateful for any advice

Richard

I would suggest you check out the AVSIM CTD Guide (link in the pinned topic in this forum) where they discuss the uiautomationcore.dll.  You might also find a solution to the black screen.  I think you have your fsx and display driver settings set too high.  Even though you have a decent system, you should be very careful maxing out the sliders.  You should also only enable the scenery that you will be using during a flight session as I have seen the black screen when there are many things running in the background trying to load (you should hear a lot of HDD activity but maybe not if you have just an SSD).  After 20-30 minutes the black screen will go away.  I solved this by downloading the utility SceneryConfigEditor (see CTD Guide for link) and I now only enable addon scenery that I will be using during a flight.  I have a superfast and powerful system too but I don't have my sliders up to the max and I do not use any tweaks.  Bufferpool tweak will also darken screens.  For a good fsx and display driver configuration guide, check out the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide (a link is in my signature).

Hi Jim I saw from the uiautomationcore dll  thread many people advice placing the latest Vista 32 bit uiautomationcore dll into the fsx main folder of the Windows 7 64bit system with little other changes or file renames, then just simply removing it if it doesn't work

I can't locate the most up to date version of the Vista version would you be able to point me in the right direction Jim then I can give this a whirl before I have a nervous breakdown

Thanks once more Jim for your kind support

The links are in the AVSIM CTD Guide.  It must be the 32 bit version of the uiautomationcore.dll that goes in your main FSX folder as FSX is a 32 bit application working in a 64 bit environment.  If you click on the version number, it will take you to the link.  Since I do not believe in the uiautomationcore.dll fix I'm not going to get anymore involved.

Hi Jim

I followed your advice re: enabling and avoiding maxing out my sliders, must admit the uiautomation dll isn't really doing it for me, you say you stray away from this, if necessary what are you using to avoid the freezes and other probs of FSX may I ask, my situation hasn't really changed still getting alot of odd scenery glitches and crashes when using the menu bar

Many thanks again

Richard

Hi Richard,

I really need to see an AppCrashView report to see exactly what crash you are getting - http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/app_crash_view.html (from the AVSIM CTD Guide).

The dll.xml provides the Addon Menu on the FSX menu bar.  Perhaps one of those modules is corrupted.

Freezes and scenery glitches come in all kinds of shapes and sizes.  If you have a lot of photoscenery you will get a lot of freezes and scenery glitches if all of it is enabled.  It could be your display drivers not installed properly or too high display settings.  It could be a bad overclock or bad voltage settings for your cpu or memory.  If scenery glitches look like "spikes" shooting up into the air, then that's a problem with high settings and your Autogen cannot be rendered properly.  The ENBSeries module or SweetFX setup will cause crashes, freezes, black screens, and scenery anomalies.  So, you see, there are so many possibilities and I would only be guessing with the information you have provided so far.  I remember last year when I installed several MegaScenery Earth States.  I had them all enabled.  I immediately got a long startup just to get to the FSX startup screen.  Then, when I selected an aircraft, say the PMDG 737, it took nearly 20 minutes for it to load and the viewing screen was totally black.  But, after 20 minutes, the black screen would go away and I could set my other settings and then load the flight.  The loading of the flight took another 20 minutes with a black screen.  Then, during the flight fsx would freeze up and I would have to shut it down or I could wait until more loading of the sim was completed.  As you can see in my profile on the left, I have a very powerful system.  This should not be happening.  So addons will bring the most powerful systems down to its knees if not properly configured.  I want to enjoy fsx and my addons not wonder all the time whether it's going to freeze and shutdown all of the time.  That's when I found the SceneryConfigEditor as I explained above in Post #2.  You have a decent system too but not powerful enough to run fsx with high settings like max Autogen, max AI, max scenery settings.  It may work for a couple of flights but eventually it will bite you in the rear end.

I have found that tweaking your Fsx.cfg is the worst thing you could possibly do to FSX if you have a modern system like in your specs.  This is why fsx suddenly works better and problems disappear when one deletes or renames the fsx.cfg, restarts fsx and lets the config rebuild.

Hope this helps.

Jim amazing support thank you so much, and put in terms that a computer half-wit like me could understand,  that's the frustrating thing, it's an endless road trying to pinpoint an exact cause, so the utility will be great thank you, i'll install the utility and get some data on my crashes, as you say crashes come in all shapes and sizes, i've gone from white rectangles of missed ground scenery, missing rear corner PMDG cockpit panels, to only wheels of aircraft and vehicles present at the gates and at RJGG lost terminal buildings the variations are endless all complimented by a menu bar that is allergic to any changes, so thank you Jim it will be nice to narrow the odds a little with the utility, I'll go on another mission to nowhere tommorow and pop the results off.

Once again thank you very much Jim,for the time you've devoted to my FSX tantrums and the extensive explanations !

    Best Wishes

Richard

You do have highmemfix=1 in the Graphics section of your fsx.cfg?

We all go through those evil unexplained crashes and freezes.  Some worse than others (and yours seem worse than others).  Glad I can help resolve your problems.

Hi Jim

Well firstly checked my fsx.cfg  Graphics list and I don't have a highmemfix =1 in the graphics section. presumably I need to enter this into my fsx.cfg  should I just copy it lower case and if so, any particular order in the graphics section list ?  thank you.

Jim you kindly sent me the AppCrash View Report  utility tool, at present would you recommend I remove the uiautommationcore.dll from my main fsx file directory folder before running the AppCrash View Utility? presumably this will totally eradicate it from my computer.

You mention ENB series I have been running SHADE for FSX not sure of your thoughts on that application

Anyway Jim lots of questions appologies once again

Best Wishes and many thanks

It can be in lower case or upper case.  The AVSIM Configuration Guide (see my signature for a link) provides info on this parameter.  You are on the right track.

I do not recommend the uiautomationcore.dll.  Most members have fixed their freezes/CTD's when they removed this dll from their main fsx directory.  I suspect they put the wrong version or maybe the 64-bit version in their main fsx folder and that will not work.  The AVSIM CTD Guide has information on the versions and a link to the earliest one (which I recommend if someone is going to put this hack into their main fsx folder).

I have Shade too and it is similar to the ENB Series.  In fact, in their Goodies directory, they have an enbseries configuration.  I have never used it though with Shade.  I had the enbseries installed when it first came out.  It worked for a week or two and then I started seeing anomalies and unexplained freezes/crashes.  Removed it and the problems went away.  Shade is an awesome product for its price.  Some say it is too complicated to set up though.  I think about any pre-set is perfect.

Hi Jim

Thank you again, these are the results from Appdata View Report utility, the crash today 26-01  was with the uiautommationcore.dll removed, this crash occured when my aircraft sitting at an add-on i attempted to change to another gate via the menu bar, an event which happens when using most menu bar functions.

Also I have placed the HIGHMEMFIX=1  in my fsx.cfg  directly under the heading {GRAPHICS}  this helped to eliminate the sea of white rectanges of missing scenery, but alas when I landed at RGJJ  the airport was there minus all the terminal buildings which i had encountered before

Anyway Jim I hope this will shed some light on the causes  and thank you for the time you are kindly investing in helping me sincerely appreciated.

Jim, just off the top of my head what do you think would be the merits of buying a new FSX ?

Thank You Very Much

  Richard

I've heard loading another variant of the a PMDG aircraft might do this.  Here is a fix I found - http://forum.avsim.net/topic/397887-crash-to-desktop-caused-by-pmdg-737ngxdll/

Hi Jim

in terms of the fix you gave me the forum link for, was the fix to ensure I had microsoft visual C++ 2008 SP1

installed  and MSV's properly installed as you advised another person in the link post #2 ?

to address the results of my APPCRASH View Report.

Thank you once again
