LOD vs Autogen Density...?

Increasing my LOD in FSX CFG higher than the default 4.5 to 6.5 for example really seems to lower my FPS... Or at the least when in a landing approach on a FSDT airport in a city such as Ft. Lauderdale the smoothness turns into a series of micro stutters.

This just seems to effect the FSX Menu slider under Level of Detail Radius which I currently have set to MEDIUM.

From what I've read though increasing LOD even up to 8-9 shouldn't really effect FPS.

That being said why is it a noticeable hit on my system?

Are you all lowering Autogen density when increasing LOD? I have Autogen on Very Dense but was considering the trade off in

lowering it for a higher LOD value.

The main reason I lower autogen density with higher Lod is avoiding ooms

I've manage to find my sweetspot for multiple addons including PMDG 737 NGX and global/vector/mesh, ASN, rex4 and ultimate airport enhancement among others.

With dx10 which uses less vas - 5.0 Lod and autogen set to dense is maximum I can go for long flights without crashing.

Now in terms of performance - autogen density mixed with high Lod will lower it. From what I saw - level of details also influences autogen.

You cannot run extreme autogen with high Lod smoothly and without ooms if you are using addon airports or addons like vector with global and higher quality mesh.

But IMO it is not possible that Lod won't affect performance as it is more data for CPU/Gpu at a time to chew.

I would reduce Lod to 5.5 and see how it goes. If you want to trade it for lower autogen than also try.

In the end on every machine it is different.

Btw - I will be also trying playing with bufferpools to see vas usage influence. Stay tuned ;)

OK - after thorough testings

Addons: FTX Global, FS Global 2010, FTX Vector, PMDG 737 NGX, GSX, ASN, REX4 Direct, Ultimate Airport E.X.  everything set to 1024 and DXT1 (water) DXT5 (clouds) except fsx.cfg which is set to 2048 for PMDG NGX.

All other options in game maxed out, MyTraffic 2013 with 25% airliner and 10% GA density sliders, no airport vehicles, Road traffic: 6%, 5% of boats and ferries

Everything tested on default EHAM in rain

Scenario 1:

Autogen maxed out, LOD 5.5 - game started with 3160-3200 VAS,avg fps 20-25 in VC

Scenario 2:

Autogen very dense, LOD 5.5 - 3020 at start, avg fps 24-27 in VC

Scenario 3:

Autogen dense, LOD 5.5 - 2950 at start, avg fps 25-27 in VC

Scenario 4:

Autogen maxed out, LOD 4.5 - 3015 at start, avg fps 25-28 in VC

Scenario 4:

Autogen very dense, LOD 4.5 - 2920 at start, avg fps 25-30 in VC

When I lowered traffic by 5% (airliner) I got additional 40mb in vas so started at around 2880.

My final settings: LOD 4.5 (won't change it until I'll start to fly less demanding aircraft, for PMDG it doesn't make sense anyway), Autogen: very dense.

Best performance and lowest VAS usage keeping great visuals in the meantime. Those 100 MB difference from LOD 5,5 is also my oom buffer.

You should follow the excellent guidelines as shown in the AVSIM FSX Configuration Guide (see link in my signature).  AVSIM generally uses the guidelines as provided by FTX/Orbx in any of their product manuals.  AVSIM uses the power of your computer system as a guide just like FTX/Orbx.  For any photoscenery, AVSIM provides guidance as recommended by the developers of MSE.  Autogen is turned off as it is not needed with photoscenery and AVSIM recommends an LOD_Radius no higher than 6.5 (MSE developers recommend 7 or 7.5) and Texture_Max_Load no higher than 2048.
