Decisions, decisions ... choosing a scenery region

Featured Replies

After 'dabbling' in all areas, I've realised I will have to make some decisions, decide where I will realistically be flying, and then go for it. My local region comes first, naturally, with all of the UK in Generation X VFR with UK2000's Xtreme Airports plus the host of freeware scenery add ons available. I guess this a common factor, you live in Germany, you pick up German scenery, same for Australia, Utah, etc.

Ah, but where else??

My airliner flying will not be frequent, and it will be short haul, so I've been collecting major European airports and some of the Mediterranean holiday destinations (although for the latter I'm happy with freeware creations). I've been to the Middle East and South East Asia in RL, so I've found freeware or payware airports for those areas too. I'm of to Kenya in August, so I do have Aerosoft's African Adventures and some freeware bits to add to it, but that won't keep me going forever....

So now I need a scenery area to fly around low and slow, in my beloved BN-2 Islander. I considered buying ORBIX's Australian scenery, I considered the South East USA in VFR (I once wrote a book set in New Mexico), but I eventually settled on the Caribbean. I've never been there, but there is some great detailed scenery around that will really be low and slow VFR and enjoyable.

I found:

Striking Software, who have produced a lovely set of scenery for most of the islands. For free. Wow.

Fly Tampa's St Maartens scenery, plus it comes with Saba and St Bart's. Cool!

The Grenadines, also by Fly Tampa.

GEX Tropics, which covers this region with nice textures (in fact I have all the GEX packs)

Monserrat, island with active volcano (freeware)

Caribbean AI Shipping

Is there anything else??

The place can get 'interesting weather', and there's plenty to see now, so I've made my choice. How did you make yours?

Fly local mostly because at least I know where the airfields are and I'm just cessna flyer mostly and short flights are rewarding. I hook up stereo 3d and fly in photoscenery Arizona wow the bump mapping delusion or fake to my eyes.

Orbx's New Zealand surely! Perfect for low and slow and "interesting" whether at times. Spectacular mountains, beaches, cities....

+1 for 3D scenery.

You may have flown over the same ground for the last 20yrs or so, but when you see it in 3D you'll be amazed how much it brings this aging sim to life.

3D cockpits are fun for a while, but whack up the convergence so all the trees, buildings, clouds, and terrain start jumping out at you, you'll be flying open mouthed pretty much most of the time, especially in a high quality scenery add-on.

You'll enjoy low and slow flying in any of the Orbx regions.

Personally, I think the Central Rocky Mountains regions in their best.   But at the moment I'm flying in their New Zealand areas, and they're great too.

Another good option for challenging low and slow flying is Pacific Island Simulations' Papua New Guinnea scenery.  About 40 airfields for about twenty quid.

so I've made my choice. How did you make yours?

I look for regions more than specific airports, sceneries geographically close to reality meaning not exactness but inducing suspension of disbelief when flown over at lower or medium altitude (textures, landclasses, coastlines, roads, water bodies etc.). I've never flown my home turf as I know it too well and couldn't be but disappointed. However I've to look into TrueLandscape France which looks impressive.

Never been convinced by "photoreal" sceneries, I thus fly mostly OrbX sceneries in North America and Australia. CRM is indeed a vey nice region as Dave said but basically all are first rate. The soon to come Northern California looks breathtaking... For Autsralia, you can also download score of extremely well done smallish airports and bush strips on top of OrbX AU. I like also PacSim Papua New Guinea as an exotic getaway.

Thanks for pointing to the Striking Software Caribbean sceneries. I didnt now them . They look fantastic.
