March 14, 201412 yr Moderator I just made my first trip to Cancun last week and am now interested in picking up a 3rd party airport for the area. I did some googling and saw that the AMS version looks to be the best one, but it appears that the developers website is down, there is no activity in their forum and simmarket has pulled it from their inventory. Having said that, is there any online retailer selling the FSX version of this still? I really want it and took a look at the other Cancun packages and might have to settle on the Tropical Sim version if I cant get the AMS version, but after seeing the screen shots of the AMS version, I was really set to get that one as it seemed to be the most complete and best looking of the current offerings. Any help would be appreciated. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
March 14, 201412 yr I think everyone took it off the market because it is completely unsupported. It is the best one released but I still wish someone else would do it. I have been to Cancun 15 times and while the airport is good with AMS, the surroundings are very mediocre. The Hotel Zone (HZ) is very basic and the use a lot of low res satellite imagery. Also, they never updated the AFCAD with the navaids for the new runway/approach. Right now, the best in the area is Latin VFR's Cozumel and Taxi2Gate's Isla Mujeres - those two are nice. I'm sure you recall all my lobbying for a top notch Cancun and I still think the area is lacking. The HZ is so important because if you take off from RWY 12 L/R and you are going to the US, you usually get an amazing view of the HZ on the left side of the aircraft. I'd just do the TS version and hope for something better in the future. It is one of their older products but AMS is not worth the search. Even if you found a place to buy it, the activation code may not work. Also, I cannot remember if TS added T3 and the new runway but there is a freeware add on at AVSIM that will update it. I do, however, think TS updated it anyway - I am not confident in my memory of this. I'm going to Isla Mujeres in 42 DAYS, 13 HOURS, 48 MINUTES and 30 SECONDS. I consider the area my second home and if you are ever on the Cancun/PDC/Isla Mujeres forums at Trip Advisor, look for me because I am pretty active and I have the same screen name. BTW, where did you stay? March 15, 201412 yr Author Moderator HI Jeff, long time no talk. Thanks for all the info above on AMS. I suppose I am glad I never got it since I might have had issues activating it on my new rig. I suppose I will go for the Tropical Sim version for now and hope that the area is revisited in the future by another developer who can add more to the surroundings as the default area looks nothing like it does in real life. When I went down there last week, I had actually just flown into Cancun and then my wife and I took a bus to Playa del Carmen where we stayed for the week. We rented a condo at Aldea Thai right next to Kool beach club and Momitas. It was my first time into that part of Mexico as all my other trips into the country were just border towns. I must say that I really liked it there. The people were very friendly, the food was GREAT, and the nightlife was good as well. Plus with the exchange rate, its a good value for the money. Once thing I liked about were we stayed was that everything was within walking distance so we never needed to rent a car or get a cab, except to and from the airport. My wife had been to Cancun a few times without me and said that I would like it as well, but its more like a big city and things are spread out a bit, requiring that you need to take cabs. I think we might try Cozumel as well one of these days. As you can tell from my avatar I love Brasil, but being only a two hour flight from Dallas, Cancun and the neighboring cities is pretty nice and makes for an easier trip to plan and more cost effective as well. Plus, going when we did, the week before spring break, it was not too crowded. Avsim Board of Directors | Avsim Forums Moderator
March 15, 201412 yr Yes, long time no talk. Work has been cutting in to FS over the past 6 months I was very close to booking Aldea Thai a few years ago. I like PDC - we went there last year for a wedding and stayed at Playacar Palace (not my choice of property - had to go for the wedding). We have also stayed at a few other properties in/near PDC. I have never been to Coz overnight. I could never find a full service property within close walking distance to a bunch of bars and restaurants. This will be out 3rd stay on Isla Mujeres and the place is just perfect - lots of properties at different price points, a ton of bars and restaurants in a compact area, beautiful beaches and a very chill atmosphere. The main entertainment are on Isla is similar to 5th Ave in PDC but smaller and more authentic. Did you hit Club De La Cerveza in PDC? Anyway, don't expect much from the Tropicalsim product. Consider it a placeholder.
