Reinstalled FSX, getting it setup;wold like some input

Featured Replies

Hey folks, just did a re-install of FSX and some add ons.  Following Nick N's Bible.

I've done searches and found some of the info., but wanted to try and consolidate everything in one place. Hope it doesn't upset.

OK, getting  to the point in the guide to defrag.   I understand the procedures for that just fine.

Easy is just to say what I'm trying to accomplish.

1. After all add ons installed, then follow defrag...no problems on that one.

2.After reading many threads on the make link stuff, I would like to do that with my setup.

a. I want to move/link the Orbx scenerys to my F: drive(this is my Acronis Back Up Drive) I have the junction link magic program to use.

b. After installing UT2, I would like to do the same with the AI as well.  would it be best to just move the whole Simobjects folder?

c. In regards to the defrag. Should I defrag on the FSX drive first before moving and linking, then defrag that drive. Or defrag first then move/link the AI,orbx etc..stuff?

3. I also want to create a backup of the FSX stuff, before the  move link.  Question is if I do incrementals on the FSX backup, will the junction/links be utilized?

Or should I back up the moved folders on F: drive as well.

It is my understanding when using links, that anything installed in the add ons or whatever may be linked, thinks it's on the FSX drive, but would install in the linked folders on the F: drive.

Even at that premise, when installing new Orbx etc. scenery; it would also update the scenery.cfg as well; so that will be up to date when using the junction thing, even though the files actually installed into F: drive?

I want to free up more space on the FSX drive, hence the moving and linking of these scenery and AI files

I'm sure many of you have done this, just looking for a little push in the right direction; not necessarily a step by step.   Is this  doable? any issues to be aware of afterwards?  Will the incremental back up work on FSX with the symbolic links?

Hope you folks can shed some light.   Sorry, I  really suck at trying to convey my thoughts when typing stuff.   If I was talking to you in person, or on the phone...this would be easy to understand.

As  mentioned, I've read the links on the symbolic link  stuff, so understand how to accomplish that process.   I wanted to clarify, what you folks move to other drives, and if there are any issues?

In the middle of this setup, so hope to see some info soon. Will  keep checking :-)

Thanks  for your patience.

Best,

David

I dont know about the junction software, but see, what I did was to get a 1TB WD Black hard disk just for game installs. Cheap and very fast, although not as much as an SSD, but I haven't found a single game that doesn't run perfect on it. My SSD is for Windows and I have a Red series 3tb for everything else (I do lots of photography).

Just install UT2 to the drive of your choice.  You cannot move the simobjects/aircraft folder from the main directory of FSX.  Of course you can try and then tell us if you were successful.  Believe the links program is for Orbx.  Do not understand why you are making that program go further than what it was intended.  You can buy 2-3 TB drives now for reasonable prices.  Make sure you do not defrag an SSD.
