About Some Alaskan Destinations

Featured Replies

Hey you pips, i was just wondering if some one can lead me to some beautiful destinations in Alaska that are suitable for a 737, but i don't mind an adventure like landing my 737 in a 4000/100 runway.Thanks.Best Regards Adib Afraj

I believe I've flown from KBFI to PANC (Anchorage) in a 737.I've also flown from KBFI to Juneau (PAJN) and Fairbanks (PAFA) In a 737.The approach to Juneau is definitely a challenge.

British Petroleum (used to be Atlantic Richfield) lands 737s at their Prudhoe Bay production facility to change out crews. It's a short gravel runway. I think it's part of Deadhorse, but I'm not sure. Look for airports at both towns to see if you find it. I think it may be the Alpine Airport, but I'm not entirely sure. Should make for a fun landing either way.----------------------------------------------------------------John S. Having lived in Alaska most of my life I can give you a list of Airports that have seen 737 actionPASY---Eariksen ASPACD---Cold BayPAKN---King SalmonPADL---DillinghamPACV---CordovaPASI---SitkaPAKT---KetchikanPABE---BethelPAOM---NomePABR---BarrowPAFA---FairbanksPANC---AnchoragePADQ---KodiakPAJN---JuneauPAYA---YakatatPADU---UnalaskaPADK---AdakThese are just a few and can be fun to fly in real weather :0)Fly safeDave in Alaska

PAVD - Valdez has a GREAT approach and will handle your 737 no problem. If weather is bad, count on using the LDA 6 (best guess on actual rwy number right now). Fantastic Approach.Juneau as mentioned above is fun, especially flying from the south. Go through the fiord for a almost Kai Tak'ish approach into rwy 26. If you fly on VATSIM, ask Bert (usually logged in as center) for that approach and he'll guide you in.

PADU(as mentioned above) is very nice.try it in the Tinmouse 737,it's great fun.best to have a chart though ;)goes for most airports there i think.tataJP.

>I believe I've flown from KBFI to PANC (Anchorage) in a 737.>>I've also flown from KBFI to Juneau (PAJN) and Fairbanks>(PAFA) In a 737.>>The approach to Juneau is definitely a challenge. One of the bad habits I fall into in FS is to getting into a habit of flying to the same places all the time. Lately I have been getting away from that and am flying in alot in Norway for instance. After reading this thread, I started my ATR-72 and I loaded up a flight plan to Juneau from PAYA, in Alaska. Great scenery, interesting weather, mountains every where and the approach to runway 8 in Juneau will definitely get your attention. Will be back to Alaska quite often.

Tried PACD to PADQ today in my PMDG737. ATC gave me runway 7 visual approach to PADQ. Now off the approach end of rwy 7 there is a mountain that looks like Mt Everest's little brother. It almost butts up to the runway threshold, in fact the threshold is displaced because of it, it appears. ATC take you to within about 5 miles of the airport at 5,000 feet AGL and then clears you to land , while you are looking over the top of the mountain DOWN at the runway ( it appeared to be almost straight down). Now 737's are not really that great in dumping alot of altitude quickly, like an F18 might be able to do, so I put out all the flaps, and yanked the power off and gave it a shot. Got to about 300 feet halfway down the runway dragging everything, so I hit the TOGA button, and just then the left engine failed signal started ringing in the cockpit ( forgot I set random failures on the PMDG a couple of weeks ago). Now the left engine is toast and later refused all attempts to restart it, something about no oil. Well I got everything settled down on the one engine remaining, and with lots of right rudder, I flew ATC's instructions for a missed approach. Now they try to put me back on the approach for rwy 7 again. This time I ask for ILS to rwy 25, so they gave me ILS to 25 , circle to land to 7. yeah right :).. I handflew the ILS approach from about 20 miles out to rwy 25, and on the way in I noticed the wind was about 12 at 3 knots. Guess who is not going to circle to land on one engine ? I landed on 25, as ATC was yelling someting about " Your not cleared to land, your not cleared to land, get off the runway " ... :) anyway, I am really getting to love flying in Alaska.

How is the default MS terrain mesh in Alaska? Any good or do you guys have recommendations for a 3rd terrain mesh?

HiA pilot called Mac Af Uhr flies 737's for Alaska airlines & writes some good trip articles in 'Airways' magazine. I have a few issues & will scan / email them out if anyone's interested (& it's not too illegal!!). Places visited I have:Red Dog mine (NW Alaska)Adak (Aleutian Islands)Barrow (inside arctic circle)(http://www.airwaysmag.com)P
