May 22, 201412 yr Hi All I currently have an Asus M5A97 Motherboard and thinking of upgrading the CPU to a AMD Piledriver FX-8 Eight Core 9590 Black Edition 4.70GHz ......... Would this be good ? My Graphics card is a GeForce GTX760 4GB I use P3D Many thanks WT
May 22, 201412 yr I have the M5A97 motherboard and recently upgraded to FX-8350. It is comfortably running at 4.33ghz with no overclocking on my part. I looked at the 9590 processor and saw that it needed specific motherboard support. You might want to verify that the M5A97 is supported for that processor. I confess I never found a definitive answer. My MSFS 2020 repaints: Flightsim.to - Profile of HStreet Working on MSFS 2024 versions.
May 22, 201412 yr Author So you are happy with running FX-8350 ? What addons & scenery do you have and what sort of FPS do you get ? Ive just looked at the FX-8350 so might end up with that.
May 22, 201412 yr Go Intel it out performs AMD I'm building an Intel rig this summer ATP MEL,CFI,CFII,MEI. Type Ratings B-737, ERJ-190,ERJ-170
May 22, 201412 yr So you are happy with running FX-8350 ? What addons & scenery do you have and what sort of FPS do you get ? I fly MIL exclusively, no tubeliners. The heavy FPS hitters are IRIS PC-21, VRS Superbug, and Ant's T-28D. For scenery, I am using FTX Global and mostly freeware add-ons for airports. My FPS are locked at 30 and except for the IRIS PC-21, the framerate stays at 30. In the PC-21, it will go down to 20fps. May 22, 201412 yr Author Interesting. I'm mainly tudeliners ( airbus-X and 737ngx ) FTX Global & Vector, UK2000 Scenery, Rex 4 and I average about 20fps at most airports If I go the route of an intel, then its a whole new mobo too, which for now I dont have the monies
May 22, 201412 yr Don't get the FX-9370 or the FX-9590, they're just heavily overclocked FX-8350s and they're overpriced, run really hot and consume lots of power. I suggest you save up for a new Intel CPU and motherboard. In less than two weeks they will release the Devil's Canyon line of CPUs, which are Haswell with increased clock speeds and better thermals.
May 22, 201412 yr Author Think I will do just that. Wait ( impatiently  ) and get an Intel cpu Cheers what about this one Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - OEM ?
May 22, 201412 yr What is your current CPU? Honestly, when it comes to applications that are mainly single-threaded like FSX and Prepar3D (that might change later though), Intel CPUs are much better. I'm sure it will be worth the wait.
May 22, 201412 yr Current CPU is AMD FX-6350 and I have a GeForce GTX760 4GB GPU Upgrading from an FX-6350 to another AMD CPU will barely make a difference. The upgrade cost is totally not worth it. I strongly suggest that you wait until you can get an Intel configuration, you'll see a great boost.
May 22, 201412 yr Author Cheers ChaoticBeauty ..... Intel it is B) So what MOBO - CPU Combination would you recommend ?
May 22, 201412 yr Cheers ChaoticBeauty ..... Intel it is B) So what MOBO - CPU Combination would you recommend ? Specs for the 4790K and the 4690K have been released but the pricing is not confirmed yet. The 4790K, being part of the i7 series, will have HyperThreading which doesn't do much for FSX and Prepar3D, so the 4690K should be the best choice. It will come at a lower clock speed, but thanks to the better thermals you should be able to overclock it with ease. Both of those CPUs will support the LGA 1150 socket, so you should go with the Z87 as the motherboard (but Devil's Canyon will also support Intel 9 series chipset, so you wait to see if you're interested in that). Things might change until release, so since you've got plenty of time until you accumulate enough money to purchase a new CPU and motherboard, just wait and see how things pan out.

Thanks for the advice !!
May 22, 201412 yr Thanks for the advice !! This video really sums up the difference. Since FSX and P3dV2 are cpu dependent they need the best CPU my fx-8350 has served me well but I feel Intel is better for flight simming. In Skyrim even though the Intel was running at a lower clock speed (200mhz less) it still beat the AMD by 50FPS to me this is a good indication of performance in FS since Skyrim is cpu bound as well.
