Upgrade dilemma

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I use P3d v2, along with ASN, Texture direct, Airbus AXE, mjc q400 and looking forward the FSL Airbus and PMDG 737, 777 for P3D. I also use FTXG and many add on airports.

As for my system, I have a i5 3540k cpu on a h100i corsair cooler overclocked to 4.4Ghz and a Asus GTX 660 oc version gpu. I run the system on a Samsung ssd.

So, I am thinking of upgrading my system to perform better in p3d. I have thought of two options.

Option 1: upgrade my gpu to the Gigabyte GTX 770 4GB oc version.

Option 2: upgrade my monitor to the new AOC 24' G-sunc model witch is about to be released soon.

The reason for upgrade is that I get shutters when in scenery - cloud rich areas that take out the immersion. I use ni inspector settings for AA without using the internal FXAA setting.

Thank you very much do your time. Your suggestion would help me decide a lot.

I have a similar system to yours nut my cpu is not over clocked. If those are your choices I would strongly recommend upgrading your graphics card.

Upgrading your monitor will not improve performance in your system. I am hoping of upgrading cpu later this year and maybe graphics card next year. With hardware it is a never ending game.

Out of your choices, I would vote to upgrade the graphics card.  I really don't think changing the monitor will do anything.  Everything is pretty smooth for me and I don't have a g sync monitor. I don't think stutters have much to do with anything except your hardware and add ons.  I think some add ons cause stutters in P3D.  I just installed my Feel There add ons and they all stutter.  None of my other add on planes do in the same conditions.

Thank you very much for your replies.

*Correction: my cpu is the 3570K

I will upgrade my gpu.

Thank you!

Considering the gpu, do you think the 4gb model is worth the extra money? I read somewhere that it is not usable if you don't use multi-monitor setup. The 770 2gb model from Asus is considerably cheaper.

Thank you

I recently updgraded my 680FTW 4GB for the 780TiSC3GB.  Before I did I spent some time testing to see how much VRAM I was using in the most heavy of situations.  I run a 40 inch Samsung at 1080p for my main display, with a small side monitor (and a third monitor hooked up to a laptop for networked stuff).

In the heaviest of conditions, in ORBX PNW in Seattle, with heavy weather via ASN, traffic, REX, add on plane etc... I was getting a little over 2GB usage.  So I would stay on the safe side, and get more than 2GB.
