Altitude intervention should reset the cruise altitude to the MCP altitude if the MCP altitude is higher than the VNAV cruise altitude. Does the cruise page show an altitude or boxes? If it's boxes than it sounds like VNAV is jumping directly to descent mode and therefore won't accept the climb to a higher altitude. In that case resetting the cruise altitude manually should work.

Very good point, something i can't test as i'm on holiday! Maybe someone else can? But where is this quoted in the FCOM? Surely this action has to be in there somewhere.
