reinstalling FS9

Featured Replies

Apparently there is no option to reinstall FS9 on top of prior installation. So I have to uninstall first. Now comes the question. Will I need to reinstall all aircraft/sceneries that I had installed?. I am trying to repair some files.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpg

Unless the addon has made some change to the windows registry you should be able to copy aircraft files to another location and paste them back in after the reinstall. You should also copy your gauges folder also as many addon aircraft also install additional gauges. Scenery can be handled in much the same way however you need to pay attention to your texture folder as many sceneries also add new textures. I guess the real answer lies in what it is that you are attempting to "repair" with the re-install. If it is aircraft or scenery related then it may be best to add them from scratch.

From memory, the only thing preventing a reinstall over the top of the old installation is the presence of a file named FS9.exe. Rename that, and you should be able to reinstall without uninstalling.Remember that a reinstall only installs FS9 NOT FS9.1. You need to apply the patch again after the reinstall. Other than that the only thing you need to be careful of is any default files or folders that might have been modified by you or by addons.Allcott

So it does not depend on registry entries?If this is really true that would be awesome.Michael J.WinXP-Home SP2,AMD64 3500+,Abit AV8,Radeon X800Pro,36GB Raptor,1GB PC3200,Audigy 2http://www.precisionmanuals.com/images/forum/747400.jpg

Correct. It is awesome.:) Allcott

What Allcott says make sense. Mikey, let us know how the install works. Did everything work OK.JimCYWG

>What Allcott says make sense. Mikey, let us know how the>install works. Did everything work OK.>JimJim,Well, I did not have to do it. I was able to 'fix' my problem without having to reinstall FS9. But I was curious about Allcott's post. So I renamed FS9.exe as he said, inserted the CD #1 and waited what would happen and low and behold after some initial delay I got a prompt screen which install option I wanted to select. Then I simply exited the install. So it does look like Allcott was 100% right, it is an awesome tip. Glad you got your problem fixed. This is a useful tip if you want to install a second `clean` install of FS onto the hard drive, remembering only that the one Registry entry created for FS always points to the last installed copy, so if you do install a second version, you will probably need to change the Registry entry back to the way it was. If you're not comfortable changing Registry entries then just create a backup of the Registry before you install the new version of FS, then restore the backup of the registry. Simple!Allcott

Now when I reinstall, I use FSManager for the sceneries. It's not free but useful like I said in the post about this software. You're gonna think I get royalties or something everytime I talk about it but I swear I don't lol.

Yes, but the `problem` then is that FS Manager dictates where veything is going to go, not you. a `for instance` - I have my addon sceery located outside the main FS folder, on an entirely separate hard drive. I do use FSM to manage aircrfat `fleets` though.Allcott

Allcott-That is a brilliant tip! One I will definetly keep in mind :)Thanx!!

In automatic mode, FSM chooses the best place for both scenery and landclass. However, if you choose "Custom Installation", you will then need to specify a scenery folder, and a landclass folder (just in case FSM locates any raw landclass file). In automatic mode, you can even change the final folder name : ie; if the source had more than one scenery, and you choose "D:scenery" as the base folder, you would see at the bottom of the screen a list with both source and target (it shows number of BGLs found on each scenery). You can click the target to change the final folder name.
