February 2, 201511 yr Author Dan can you help me out? I posted this topic also on PPRUNE http://www.pprune.org/spectators-balcony-spotters-corner/555533-help-again-star-rwy-03-cdo-rnav-imbom5k.html But i'm not sure where this guy is going with PMDG and RNAV equipped? Vernon Howells
February 3, 201511 yr Commercial Member But i'm not sure where this guy is going with PMDG and RNAV equipped? ...and this is why you shouldn't post sim stuff on PPRuNe. While he's correct in that the plane doesn't have GBAS and all of that (because FSX doesn't have GBAS/GRAS/WAAS/LAAS stations in it), it has no bearing on the idea that you can/cannot fly RNAV procedures in FSX. RNAV, at its most basic level, is simply the idea that you can navigate directly to a point in space without first having to intercept some sort of radial or airway (NDB/VOR/etc). RNAV RNP approaches can be flown without GBAS/GRAS/WAAS/LAAS. The only time you'd need GBAS/GRAS/WAAS/LAAS is if you're trying to fly down to LPV or LP minima (FAA AIM 1-2-2 b 1 (a) (1) ). The only other requirement is that you maintain your ANP through whatever method you're using (in the NGX's case: GPS mixed with IRUs and DME). I don't see a requirement to have GBAS/GRAS on the chart. Sounds like he might need a refresher on what RNAV entails. Since he provided his credentials, I'll provide mine: Work with the FAA NextGen initiative, and TERPS design experience. ...and references to the AIM. Kyle Rodgers
February 3, 201511 yr Author ...and this is why you shouldn't post sim stuff on PPRuNe. I posted on the spotters corner, its for the non pilots forum and you have a few FSX users on there and sometimes real pilots will chip in. I Just didn't understand where he was going with his comments towards the NGX and also that STAR isn't RNAV. Thanks for the reference material. Vernon Howells
February 3, 201511 yr Commercial Member I posted on the spotters corner, its for the non pilots forum and you have a few FSX users on there and sometimes real pilots will chip in. Yeah. Still. I take issue with a lot of "real" aviation forums because they assume all sim-related questions are asked by people who know nothing. In fact, I know plenty of simmers who are also pilots and know a lot about aviation, and I know plenty of airline drivers who know very little for the job they do. I can't blame them for the assumption, because I know a lot of simmers who claim to know quite a lot and actually don't, but I think the two "realms" need to come together more over time. The sim is where I think we'll get a lot of pilots down the line. I Just didn't understand where he was going with his comments towards the NGX and also that STAR isn't RNAV. Related to the above, I think he was honestly trying to come off as smarter than he really was. As I mentioned in my last post, GBAS/GRAS/WAAS/LAAS aren't required for RNAV. They are required to fly down to LPV and LP minima, but that's just about it. It could also be leveraged to get a lower ANP value, but that doesn't mean it's required to fly lower RNP values. Since the STAR is non-RNAV, that only reinforces my thought. As I mentioned earlier in this post: a lot of the aviation realm is full of people who like to pretend to be smarter than they really are to hold themselves out as some sort of exceptional contributor to the realm of aviation (even I've been guilty of this on occasion). Sounds like this guy fell a little victim to that idea. Kyle Rodgers

So its do it yourself really! And the first year for me has hurt lol and will continue to, but its all sinking in slowly. If you ever get time, check-out skysurfer007 on youtube hes a RW pilot and uses the NGX and hes done a few goos videos. Nothing recently though its all a year or so old. Since the STAR is non-RNAV, that only reinforces my thought. Double checked its RNAV CDO STAR Vernon Howells
February 3, 201511 yr Commercial Member Nothing recently though its all a year or so old. Yeah, I've been slacking on my channel, too. Double checked its RNAV CDO STAR Still, unless the EU world is vastly different, GBAS/GRAS/WAAS/LAAS is not required for basic RNAV procedures. I can fly the HILEY (RNAV) STAR into MIA with a basic GPS unit if I wanted to. Kyle Rodgers
