July 20, 200520 yr For several years I have been using Brian Burger's Coastal Shipping scenery add-on which adds ships to the Alaskan waterways. It is CoastalShip1.zip here at Avsim. This is a FS2002 file that worked well for me in FS2004.I just did a complete, clean reinstall of FS2004 and have been adding sceneries back in slowly. The Ships DO display properply but the Wake does not now. I get the white rectangle where the wake should be (and was before) which of course suggests a "missing texture".There are three "wake" files in the texture subfolder and I have tried moving and copying them to my main texture folder - same result - no wake!Any ideas why this is happening and how to get my "wake" back? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
July 20, 200520 yr I know you are a scenery designer so I won't concentrate much on anything to do with scenery installation. I looked at the Zip Dive and couldn't see anything that would cause any problem unless you did a fresh download of the scenery in which case you could try downloading again. Certainly there are no specific intructions for installing. I wouldn't think the textures need to be in the main texture folder though. Wondering if it has to do with DX files overwriting during reinstall. Perhaps try Start/Run/dxdiag to see if the version is the one you thought you had? I think the latest version is 9c. Even if it comes up as that it might be worth doing the tests in dxdiag or even perhaps consider reinstalling 9c. Or maybe a graphics setting in FS9 is not the same setting you had before? Try Render to Texture on/off?
July 20, 200520 yr I have tried all of the above - still no wake on any of these ships. Perhaps its just one of those great mysteries of life! Thanks for the feedback though.
July 20, 200520 yr Sorry to hear it's still not working right. Did you save a backup of the old FS9.cfg and copy the relevent parts into the new one?
July 20, 200520 yr Yep - the settings are exactly the same as before the FS2004 reinstall and I have experimented with changing everything I can think of such as render to texture etc. - still to wakes.Perhaps I am not destined to win this one.
July 20, 200520 yr The number of times I've read about reinstalls of FS9 and not working right afterwards! Makes me wonder if something in the registry is the cause (since that seems the only thing hidden unless one goes in to have a look). Was this reinstall on an existing Windows or put it another way was everything a fresh install or was it just FS9 and related files? In your position and if it was just a reinstall of FS9 I'd be tempted to uninstall again, then look in the registry and delete anything to do with FS9 (using Find and Find Next in regedit) before reinstalling. I don't think I'd be too frightened to do that if I had tried everything else but then again I'm no real Windows expert either although I have had a fair degree of success with anything I dared to touch in the registry up till now. I hope someone with more knowledge than me can advise further in case I have said anything that could cause more problems than it solves.
July 20, 200520 yr This was just a clean reinstall of FS2004. Everything else that I have added back in works beautifully - perhaps even better than before - it is only this one item I liked that is being a problem child. As mentioned before the ships display just fine - only the wake is showing as a missing texture.Since everything else is at least as good if not better, I think I will just count my blessings!
July 20, 200520 yr If anyone wants to try this on their machine it is very easy to do. The easiest ship to look at is just South of the Juneau Airport in the channel leading towards the Juneau Harbor location. You can't miss it.I'd love to know if it works correctly for anyone else.
July 21, 200520 yr I installed in FS9 and same problem as yours. I don't consider there is a problem with my FS9 installation. Do you want me to try in FS2002?
July 21, 200520 yr Thanks Charlie - no, no need to try it 2002 as I don't run it any more.Glad to know you saw it too. I was begining to think these old eyes were playing tricks on me!
July 21, 200520 yr I tried in FS2002 anyway and fully expected it to work properly but it does not! Exactly the same problem. Seems like there is something wrong with the textures. Edit: I opened the 3 textures in DXTBmp and they display normally, but I did notice the alpha channel (if there is one) is white. Maybe that's it?
July 21, 200520 yr I am not an expert regarding "channels" so am not sure how to answer you. I had not tried looking at it in DXTBMP but will now.Perhaps this whole thread ought to be moved over to the scenery design forum so some "experts" on the subject can weigh in on it!I am positive it worked before - both in 2002 and 2004 before my reinstall. I hope I am not just "loosing it" !!
July 21, 200520 yr I think you're right about asking in the scenery design forum. Someone there should have an answer. If you're losing it then I certainly have done! I have uninstalled and deleted the files as I don't think I can do anything else except suggest that the texture format might be wrong. Certainly is beyond me to know what the proper format should be, especially that DXTBmp does not really make clear the existing format of a texture file. If it did, I'd have more of a clue where to go from there.
July 21, 200520 yr I have the same missing wake, I believe it is a Navy or USCG ship by the airport. The problem seems to be in the files themselves. I think that ship is the only missing wake problem that I've noted. I think there are different wakes for different boats. It must be a missing texture file.
