PMDG 747 Basic Review Please?

Featured Replies

Would someone who has bought this big new bird & given it a fly (or three!;)) be kind enough to give us a basic review of this much anticipated addon?Cheers :)Josh

Ok real pilot talking here:she's very buggy!!I can't beleive the aircraft was in development that long. It seems as the folks down at PMDH have no real clue how this aircraft performs.I could fly the queen at 70 knots and it didn't stall... (at 220 tonnes)For freeware it'd be good, but payware???Get the level D 767. Not entirely bug free but hey, given its competition - well there is none!Cheers,Adrian

If you can't even spell the name of the company right, how exactly are we supposed to believe you? I sense jealousy in the air against the best developer out there, hands down.

Buggy? What are you talking about :SThis is the best addon I have ever seen. All systems realy well modeled, flies lovely. EICAS is simply brilliant!

Well, no one should ever take just 1 review and make a purchase judgement based on that 1 review. No matter who made it. It seems the vast majority of reviews are positive. It would be likely in my opinion anyway that there would be at least 1 patch and it would work even better, course this is just my opinion(repeating). :) Most of the 'negative' comments relate to its price. Which seems like happens with just about every addon now a days, as the prices rise.Just imagine the uproar if the next FS was $100 w/ little preceived improvement. :-cool

Adrian you wrote the same thing in a forum on another website...I test flew the baby yesterday...It is a new aircraft, so new things and ways has to be learned before we can really fly it.But the more you fly the more you discover!N1/N2/EGT are most of the time different!!! Which is really something if you ask me!Automatic flight control is perfect!!! LVD is amazing, but it lacks Auto reliability...The FMC is 100% I think or very close to it!The sounds are not as good as LVDs...But this package is amazing, fps in spot view (with DXT3 textures) are amazing! Such a big aircraft with this good fps in spot view is unique...Fps inside is not as good, but lowering the guage quality in FS9s Display settings, got my fps from 7/8 to 20...Do you wanna see some screen shots from my test flight?Boaz....

Are you the same Adrian that said somewhere that the 747-400 was buggy after flying her for 10 min ...?This bird flyies wonderfully and is a real masterpiece.Maybe should you switch to Train sim or Nintendo, no?...

Well having out it through her paces now for about 9 hrs of flying and 6 sectors i am pretty happy.A couple of little vnav bugs when modifying descent speeds but if you use the econ speeds no drama's.Excellent handling and in general better than the NG release.I personally dont fly a 747-400 around at 70kts nor my A-320 which i fly for a living so really couldn't care about how it handles at those speeds. It looks like we will get acars sooner rather than later.I'd love to see the PMDG people talk with AS5 people to organise a way to download winds and forcasts ala ACARS intothe FMC.Now that would be a first and a half.Havn't looked at the failure system yet as i want to see what is out of whack and not working.Best model by light years of the 747-400.Just looking at the model with the flaps fully down is awesome.ALso great wing droop with a full load of gas.She looked great taxiing down to the end of Rwy16R at Narita sagging all over the place. As a package nothing can come close to this sim.Yes i have got about three hundred hours on PS1 but really found it in the end quite lifeless as without visuals of any real sort i might as well be playing the stock market.I am sure there will be other bugs but at this stage there are no show stoppers and in general its an excellent package and well worth the money and then some.Considering that PS1 is 6 times the price and wont even run on most people machines without a huge amount of effort i think PMDG just cornered the serious simmer market for the 747-400.CheersDarren

Buggy?I have flown it 7 times now, both manual and with AP - one of the best #### aircraft I ever flew in FS! the AP is the best yet with smooth capture of headings and altitudes - you will not find a better ILS capture in another FS aiplane. The VC is simply stunning. I set a couple of failures and followed the non normal checklists to sort them out - great! To paraphrase Jim from the "Royal Family" (UK comedy show), "Buggy my Arse!"Oh I am not suggesting it hasn't any bugs because its software, but the real 747 sims will have bugs and so will the real airplane! PMDG will listen to its users and issue patches.Ray Keattch

..I'd love to see some screenshots, yeah.I managed to buy it eventually yesterday, and I've only managed to have a quick flight, but I couldn't get the PFD working. I don't really know what I'm doing though. I could do with a tutorial, and I think I read in their forum a few days ago that they are going to release one soon. From what I have seen I love it, I think it's great. I am tired of simple panels and pressing ctrl+e to start engines, so I switched to payware stuff, and I really like LDS, PSS and especially PMDG stuff, so for me, it is worth the $55 - it's like the next level of simulation. (It's also worth pointing out that they fact that it's priced in US$ makes it a bit cheaper for us Brits - and it's deffo worth more than a crummy Chelsea shirt! ;))

Anyways...Here is a look from the cockpit door:http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123895.jpgAnd here is ma niew bebe in front of a famous high point near Seattle ;)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123897.jpgThe Wing flexing sceptics GO HOME!!!This baby has flexing wings! On a slow approach they flap around so high you think they will break off...On slow speed they actually flap and vibrate!! Yummy!!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/123898.jpgLet me know if you want more...Boaz...

Got it about 8:30am yesterday, been flying around non-stop since (big supply of coffee)All I can say is it *feels* like a 744!When you are rolling down that skinny runway and watching the end come near as you approach rotation speeds in the 180 range you just feel yourself praying that you'll get the Q'PIG'UEEN off in time. :-lol I have not had a single real problem, everything works as it should. Now, i'm not a expert, but been in PS1 since the Fly! days so I've been around the block a couple of times.Only beef I have is you can not do circuits ... the FMC doesn't like a from & to Airport of the same location. It takes them and works, but you get a big ole nasty number on the Progress page. It doesn't actually hurt anything, just looks funny :-lolYou know it's right when you start it up from cold and dark without looking at any manuals. Only problem I had was getting used to which way to click to use something. Once you figure that out, you are all set. Ground stearing is fantastic. You can really work this baby with just your keyboard and mouse.Remember that your Recall/Cancel buttons are on the FO's side of the panel ... when you are preflighting, it is easier from that seat.RayPS: I have removed PS1 from my machine. That says a lot.

Many thanks to all for the reviews & especially to Boaz for the screenies.Believe it or not, I've never bought a payware aircraft but I might just have to reconsider now!Cheers :)Josh

Sounds has always been PMDG's weakpoint, and still is.She's a good plane, but she'll have a tough time knocking LD767 out of my fav.

I just bought it last night and after a quick shakedown run around Paine Field I flew her from KSEA to KSFO. I didn't read the manuals at all, and was able to figure out the FMC, autopilot and most other systems quickly from my experiences with the PMDG 737 and LVLD 767. Great flight. I must say I LOVE the "pause at top of decent" feature. I'll be able to fly some longhaul flights now without babysitting it for 9 hours. Fun for me is the departure/climb and decent/approach phases and I gotta say, she FEELS like what I'd think a 747 would feel like. Great to hand fly the ILS to touch down too. The VC is also awesome. I never flew the 737 in the VC much, but this 747s VC is a joy to use. Only downside I have found is that the ambient noise in the cockpit is very high for me. I cannot hear the default FS9 ATC and have to read the text instead. I have turned down the PMDG sound option, but might have to tweak some more.Anyway, for the enjoyment this should provide for the next few years, I'm more than satisfied with the purchase!
