Future tech: Full-motion simulators without the motion?

Featured Replies

Researchers have been having fun with mucking about with people's vestibular systems by delivering weak electrical currents just behind their ears.[a href=http://www.forbes.com/technology/2005/08/04/technology-remote-control-humans_cx_lh_0804remotehuman.html]Link to the Article[/a]quote from the article:----The most persuasive commercial applications of Maeda's GVS device will most likely be in gaming; researchers put together a crude virtual racing game to demonstrate how GVS heightened the perception of centrifugal force as users watch the car wind its way around the track on a video screen. Manabu Sakurai, NTT's marketing manager, says the company is currently investigating whether or not gamers would be interested in the device. Flight simulators are another area of interest."Many people talk about that," Sakurai explained. "Because GVS causes you to feel the same kinds of motion as a large-scale flight simulator, it could be a much simpler and more cost-effective way to train people."----- Does this technolgy hold the promise of what's missing from PC-based flight simulators: the sense of actual motion?

Sounds like a virtual vomit comet to me. I can tell you this would induce motion sickness in me almost instantly. I cant play first person shooter games for this reason. Zero problems with real flight, nor with Flight sims, but the rapid movement at very close aspect angles brought on by the FPS games makes me ill. Im not alone in that. Fresnel Lens's on computers do the same for me.This inner ear device mentioned in this article would be a personal he11 for someone like me.Eric

>Sounds like a virtual vomit comet to me. I can tell you this>would induce motion sickness in me almost instantly.Yes, perhaps. Though if your body actually senses the motion (note in the article that people could actually be made to walk in different diretions through this gadgetry), than perhaps those people who aren't prone to sickness from actual flying might not be prone to sickness from this simulated motion. Not that i Know what I am talking about, but it's interesting that the article didn't make mention of it. It did say that long-term effects of sending these electrical currents into your ear is now known, which is somewhat worrying ;)

God help you when it "sticks". Oops, can't seem to turn it off, vomit, gag, hack hack!Don't sign me up soon!Noel

I'll take one!Of course, my frat used to have contests, hmm, never mindThomas

hmm. , think i'll stick with physical motion simulators for now, rather than psychologically induced ones! Good idea but not yet convinced, especially as home-motion simulators are beginning to kick in at less than $3000CheersDan
